A woman in her 50s was stabbed inside a Catholic church in Ireland on Tuesday morning while parishioners were reciting the Rosary before Mass.
The attack occurred at Holy Cross Church in Tramore, County Waterford, around 9:45 a.m.
The victim, a local woman who has not been publicly identified, was taken to University Hospital Waterford with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
She was stabbed on the altar after a man entered the church and accosted her.
An Irish man in his 30s was arrested by Gardaí police and is in custody. He is described as a stranger to the victim but known to police.
The motive remains under investigation. One report indicated the incident may have been religious-based.
Parish priest Father Richard O’Halloran told local media the attack appeared “random in nature.”
“It has been a very shocking event,” Father O’Halloran said.
The Diocese of Waterford and Lismore issued a statement saying it was “deeply shocked by a violent incident which occurred this morning during Mass at Holy Cross Church, Tramore.”
Parishioners immediately summoned emergency services as the attack unfolded.
The investigation continues, with Gardaí appealing for anyone with information to contact Tramore Garda Station. No further details on the suspect’s background or possible motive have been released.

Niall Cummins, of the Willows, Clarinwood, Tramore, was brought before Waterford District Court on Wednesday morning in relation to the knife attack on Mary McNamara.
Random in nature. In a country where protestant and Catholic fighting has been going on for years?
I place my bet on this being a mohammedan stabber not a protestant stabber.

Here’s another question for you to ponder. The Gardaí says they are now “technically examining” the knife.
What does that even mean? Are they searching it for hidden compartments or ancient inscriptions?
I miss the old days, when at least a few things made sense.
My former church pastor taught the concealed carry permit class required in the fetid state of Oregon. EVERYONE, except the kids under 21, had a CCW and weapon on them. We never had violence in the church. I wonder why?. It is no wonder why hopolophobes want to restrict guns in churches. They want Christians helpless and dead. Would Dillon Roof had such success if the church he targeted had armed parishioners? Sure, a mosque can have RPGs, bombs, machine guns, SAMs, and everything else for their terroristic ways. But 75 year old Bernice carry a .38 special in church to protect herself and the flock? Aw, heck no. That’s racist.
According to the article that Rio posted a link to, Ireland has anti-knife laws that prohibit knives that exceed some specific measurements.

The vaguest description possible with no description tends to make one suspicious that they are being a bit too careful for objective police work.
