8 And we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half tribe of Manasseh.

9 Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may prosper in all that ye do.

10 Ye stand this day all of you before the Lord your God; your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Israel,

11 Your little ones, your wives, and thy stranger that is in thy camp, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water:

12 That thou shouldest enter into covenant with the Lord thy God, and into his oath, which the Lord thy God maketh with thee this day:

13 That he may establish thee to day for a people unto himself, and that he may be unto thee a God, as he hath said unto thee, and as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

Years ago, I took a brief course in Music Business Law with the superb Saxaphone Player John Payne. (Sax player for Van Morisson, Bonnie Rhait, and others). It wasn't a College Course, but, rather a workshop for Musicians attempting to navigate the arcane, and often unjust, Music Biz.

Legally, for a contract to be valid, there is something called "Consideration". A musician will hold a date in exchange for a deposit. There is a deadline for cancellations, which, if not met, results in the Musician keeping the deposit. Unless it's some horrible disaster, the deposit is deemed "consideration" for the musician who didn't book anything else for that date.

On the other side, the client knows that the musician is holding that date for him, and won't book anyone else. That's his consideration. Both sides are giving something up, and both sides have a Promise.

In reality, it doesn't work that way. Clients cancel at the drop of a hat, because "Uncle Louie will play the piano for free", and they want their deposit back! If the musician refuses (as per contract) the aggrieved client can do lots of things to ruin the musician forever. When Record Executives, Booking Agents, A & R Scouts, and Producers get involved, it's even worse. There is a book called "Starmaking Machinery", and tells the sad tale of Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen (that's a band) and their Record Contract woes. It was quite an eye-opener when I read it back in the 1970s.

In Today's Reading, Moses discusses the Covenant (Contract) between God and His People. Unlike the typical Music Contract (Heads I win, tails you LOSE), both sides get "Consideration". God has rescued the people from Slavery. He performed the Miracle at the Red Sea. He fed them with Manna and Quail. He brought Water from The Rock. He caused their clothing and shoes NOT to wear out for 40 years of rough desert life. And, finally, He brought them to the Promised Land. All He asks in return is that the People Love, Trust, and Obey Him. That's The Consideration from the other side.
