Our Father Who Art in Heaven,
Hallowed Be Your Name!

A New Study For A New Year: Personalities

Deuteronomy 11:26-29

Imagine being in a job for forty years. Imagine then being forced to retire, and hand the reins to a much younger man. Although you trained this man yourself, and have been assured by "The Boss" that he can do the job, there must be a scintilla of regret over the whole situation. Will this new leader be capable? Will the people respect him? Will he, (and this is a big one) LOVE the Boss the way you did? Can he inspire the People to LOVE The Boss as well, and care about the Whole Community, other than themselves?

Moses was one kind of leader, and Joshua was quite another. While Sheep in the desert needed a Shepherd, an Army on the Move needed a General, and that required a whole different Personality.

Moses responded to this Challenge by writing everything down before he would be "passing on".

We call these writings "The Torah", which means "The Law". Certainly, there are a lot of "laws" in the Torah. They cover every aspect of living, including sanitation, marriage, warfare, property rights, civil rights, inheritance, government, ritual, holidays, and so much more. I believe in my heart that Moses wrote all of this under the direct inspiration of The Holy Spirit. Jesus believed this too, and He said so. That puts me in excellent company.

But, "inspiration" is not the same as "dictation". If it were, we would reduce Moses to the position of a "Royal Stenographer" taking dictation.

The Inspiration of the Bible is present in every word, every diacritical mark (jots and tittles) and even every letter. Yet, the Personality of Moses comes through. We see this also in the Prophets. Isaiah has a totally different personality than Jeremiah, yet there is a consistent thread that ties it all together over centuries of writing.

Today, on The National Day of Prayer, we can Thank God for this insight. We will all pass away at some point, and our Children and Grandchildren will be the ones in charge of our nation.

Like Moses, we need to teach them well, so they can do the job when we "retire".
