Exodus 9:1-7

9 Then the Lord said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh, and tell him, Thus saith the Lord God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

2 For if thou refuse to let them go, and wilt hold them still,

3 Behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thy cattle which is in the field, upon the horses, upon the asses, upon the camels, upon the oxen, and upon the sheep: there shall be a very grievous murrain.

4 And the Lord shall sever between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt: and there shall nothing die of all that is the children's of Israel.

5 And the Lord appointed a set time, saying, To morrow the Lord shall do this thing in the land.

6 And the Lord did that thing on the morrow, and all the cattle of Egypt died: but of the cattle of the children of Israel died not one.

7 And Pharaoh sent, and, behold, there was not one of the cattle of the Israelites dead. And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people go.

Happy Passover to Our Jewish Friends.

The Seder Service has a solmn moment when the Plagues are remembered. A drop of wine is spilled for each plague, symbolizing the incredible loss and suffering that ordinary people endured due to their government's (and official religion's) stubbornness and duplicity. After the Blood, Frogs, Flies, and Gnats came something so horrible that God had to separate the Hebrews from the Egyptians. The Plagues were no longer just a natural process that had gone overboard. It was now targeted.

Why would God attack the cattle? All they do is munch grass and produce milk. Here we thought that God was judging the gods of Egypt, not their animals.

But, the Egyptians worshipped their livestock in ways that were over-the-top. The bull, called Apis", was considered a god. He was the son of Hathor, the Sky Goddess, and was believed to have been conceived by a ray of light. Vast Temples to Apis were built to house the Sacred Bull. When the Sacred Bull died, he was mummified and buried with full royal honors. Beneath Memphis there were vast tunnels and tombs to house the enormous sarcophagi of these animals. Some have probably not even been discovered yet. The resources diverted from the nation to house, worship, and bury these animals was ridiculous, but the Cult spread far and wide, and and continues to this day with The Running of the Bulls and the Elaborate Ceremonies accompanying Bullfights in Spain.

But what about the Cows? Hathor, Apis's mother, was considered the Goddess of the Sky. But she was also depicted with a cow's horns, or even a whole cow's head on a female body. She was a favorite of pregnant women and sacrifices and prayers offered to her for a safe childbirth. Both Apis and Hathor got more attention and sacrifices than the the more major deities such as Ra, Isis or Osiris. While Isis and Osiris were primarily concerned with the afterlife, Hathor and Apis were concerned with fertility, abundance, provision, and procreation...in other words, the HERE AND NOW.

Neither Apis nor Hathor could help Pharaoh as he watched his nation's economy go down the drain.
