During the 1960s and 70s, there was a surge of interest in Eastern Mysticism, Natural Foods, Chinese Traditional Medicine, Herbal Remedies, and Witchcraft. While this may have been a reaction to Fear of Nuclear Annihilation, or the Degradation of the Environment, "MK-Ultra", or even the result of being the first generation raised on Television, we may never know. Although the Left took advantage of this, even Conservatives became "crunchy". Let's face it, NOBODY likes Political Repression, Poison Water, Filthy Air, Illiteracy, Over-processed Food, Racism, or Bigotry. One of the Vegetables that gained popularity in the era is Ginseng Root. This root has all kinds of legendary properties for what is now called "Men's Health". (OK, let's call it "Hippy Viagra"). This crazy theory developed from the shape of the Ginseng root, which resembles a human being. As you can deduce from the linked Wiki Article, Ginseng does contain some powerful chemicals, but no proven Therapeutic Value.

Mandrakes also have a bulbous, gnarly root, and gained a similar reputation as a Fertility Drug and Aphrodisiac. Leah's son Reuben finds some in a field and brings the plant home to his mother, not that Leah needed any help in the Fertility Department. From the context, though, it seems like things were "cooling down" between her and Jacob. It may have been years since he was at her tent, considering that Reuben was now a young lad gathering wild mandrakes out in the field.

Meanwhile, Rachel was still trying to have a baby. There were no Fertility Clinics, but...there was Leah with...MANDRAKES! Maybe those would help.

Leah's price for the Mandrakes was a night with her own husband. How Sad!

In any case, both women conceive, and the race is on.
