7 And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padanaram;

8 And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;

9 Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.

10 And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.

If you're as old as I am, you probably remember the Watergate Scandal. Whatever the original crime had been, it was the subsequent Cover-Up, Hearings, Book Deals, and News Coverage that made it so pervasive in our National Psyche that it added a new expression to American Language. Every scandal since then has been referred to with the suffix "gate". Whether it's Iran-Gate, or "Russia-Gate" or "China-Gate", or whatever else causes a political kerfuffle, the suffix of "Gate" makes it NEWS. The latest scandal in DC is about a massive sewage spill into the Potomac...I assume it had to be through a "Water gate" that had been left open.

The thing about Watergate that shocked most Americans was the bugging of the Oval Office. When speaking with the Chief Executive in his own office, one would expect PRIVACY. There are some places, like a Confessional, or Pastor's Office, or with your Family Doctor, where you should be accorded privacy and Confidentiality.

This would not be the case if one lived in a cluster of tents in the desert. There can be no expectation of privacy when the walls are made of cloth. Because of this, Nomadic People have to formulate elaborate rules of Hospitality, Privacy, and Respect. I would imagine that eavesdropping would be frowned upon, and yet, here we see it setting in motion the destruction of the family.

Rebecca eavesdropped on Isaac and Esau. This provided the impetus for her to engage Jacob in a scheme to get Esau's Blessing. Now Esau wants to kill Jacob, and Isaac sends Jacob to his wife's relatives to find a bride (and escape Esau). Esau hears this exchange (probably by eavesdropping), and he gets another wife, related to Ishmael, to one-up his brother.

All of the Eavesdropping, Subterfuge, Circumvention, and Collusion won't hasten God's perfect Plan. The Blessing would have gone to Jacob no matter what they did, because God had already chosen Jacob from the Foundation of the World to be the Progenitor of the People of Israel. We will see tomorrow what God does to affirm His Promise to Jacob...and it has nothing to do with "Rebecca-Gate".
