9 And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.

10 And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.

11 And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon:

12 Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.

14 And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair.

15 The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.

16 And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.

17 And the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife.

18 And Pharaoh called Abram and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife?

19 Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.

20 And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.

Let's face it. I'm 73 years old, and, although I do my best to look nice, I don't expect to be snatched away into some king's harem anytime soon. I wouldn't expect anyone to murder my husband to obtain my favor, even when I was a lot younger. What's going on with this passage of Scripture, and why was Abram behaving that way?

Here's a few lines from Classic Rock that may have a clue to this behavior:

"But you run and you run
To catch up with the sun
But it's sinking,
And racing around to come back behind you again..." (Pink Floyd, from the song "Time.")

These dreary words from an even drearier song are about youth wasting time until age takes it away. It's a sad philosophy from a dysfunctional mind, but echoes Aristotle's view of the Universe that Galileo taught against. It shows the person (Earth) as stationary with the Sun racing around him. We know now, of course, that Galileo was right and the religious authorities were wrong on that one. It is interesting that Pink Floyd's lyrics reflect the erroneous theory of Man being the center of the Universe. And, if you look at it carefully, one can see that ego-centrism is a feature of many mental illnesses. Paranoia, Narcissism, Megalomania, Tyranny, and Oppression can be linked to it. It's all about Me, Me, Me!

This egocentric personality trait sometimes expresses itself as "Catastrophism". here's what therapists say about it:

Catastrophizing is one of the most common cognitive distortions that involves believing the worst possible outcome will occur as a result of some action or event, even if it's very unlikely. When you catastrophize, you convince yourself that an event is far worse than is realistic or probable. Catastrophizing is often used as an unhealthy coping mechanism to control an uncomfortable situation. (Cleaveland Clinic)

While the Ancient World may have had such a "custom", Abram was probably "catastrophizing" a bit. Sarai may have indeed been beautiful, even at her age, but, to imagine that he had to lie to Pharaoh about their relationship to prevent himself being murdered was a bit much. By saying that Sarai was his sister, he was actually freeing her up to be taken into the harem. He was putting HER in a bad situation to save his own skin. He was also putting the Pharaoh into an unintentional sinful situation. Abram, by lying, endangered his wife, and led another person into sin.

The "catastrophe" that Abram imagined would never had happened if they had just acted like a normal, elderly, couple fleeing the famine. Because of Abram's wild imagination of the very WORST outcome, he devised this deception, which almost caused a REAL catastrophe.

We know that Abram was a Man of Faith. Yet, he was also HUMAN, and seemed to have a tendency to Catastrophize.

Let's hope he doesn't make the same mistake twice...but..uh oh. Further reading will show that he does this again later on, and passes that same trait down to his son Isaac.

Nobody's perfect!

Amen to your prayer and word. I am pretty sure Abraham noticed his wife being ‘looked at’ in the past. Traveling around in unknown parts is certainly risky. But I do like the word Catastrophizing. My sister used that against me when I was naughty and made it sound much worse when she told mom. BTW I saw PF a couple of times way back when. 1at album I liked, got dreary after that but pretty good special effects in concert.

They’ve become political and antisemitic in recent years, so I’m through with them!

“Dreary” can ruin the music for me!
