Genesis 4:1-14

4 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord. 2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.

4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

6 And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

9 And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?

10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;

12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

13 And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

15 And the Lord said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

16 And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

I teach music theory in a somewhat unconventional manner. I tell stories, draw pictures, and use analogies to get the point across. Little kids get a kick out of coloring in the pages representing the keys on the piano, the notes in a song, the chords in the Diatonic Scale, or the relationships between the Scales on the Circle of Fifths. I go through reams of colorful stickers and dozens of felt-tip pens, but the kids LEARN. Sometimes though, even with Twins, there is a child who just wants to read the notes and play the song, while his brother wants to know what chords go together best. I have one family where the boy wants to play keyboard in a band, while his little sister wants to play "Fur Elise".

One of my favorite analogies is comparing the Major Scale with its Relative Minor. (This is especially interesting when teaching Guitar Soloing). Essentially, the Major and Relative Minor use the same notes, but just start in different places. The most obvious example is C Major, which starts on C, and then uses the next seven white keys on the piano to "sing" Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do. The Relative Minor uses the same white keys but starts on "La" instead of "Do". That's six notes up from "Do". Every Note in the Western Scale has its own Relative Minor, and they always start six notes up from the root. .

The Key Signature, which is like the DNA of the Scale, is the same for both the Major Scale and its Relative Minor, so you have to PLAY it to figure out which one it is. If it sounds open, happy, victorious, or bombastic, it's probably the Major. If it's dark, moody, romantic, mysterious or spooky, it 's more than likely the Relative Minor. They have the same DNA, but different personalities, just like Identical Twins. Many of my students know pairs of Twins from School or Family, and they will readily attest that they understand completely. You can't tell them apart until they open their mouths. Then you know exactly who's who.

From the words of Scripture, we can assume that Cain and Abel were full Brothers with the same parents, close in age, and living near each other. They probably had the same upbringing, heard the same stories, and worshiped the same God. But they had Personalities that could not have been more different if they were total strangers.

We already saw how Abel took his father's stories to heart, and prepared a Sacrifice from the best of his flock. The God Who had expelled Abel's parents from the Garden was not to be trifled with.

Cain, on the other hand, seemed to be just going through the motions. He figured it was OK to do whatever he wanted and still somehow appease the Deity. God showed Cain that He WASN'T Pleased at all.

Instead of saying:

"Whoa...that was a stupid mistake on my part!",

Cain instead turned his Jealousy and Wrath onto his Brother, whose Sacrifice WAS being accepted, in a visible manner.

Jealousy and Envy among siblings is common, but it usually doesn't result in MURDER (Thank God!).

This is why Jealousy is considered a sin. It's natural to feel unhappy when one feels slighted, or to wish you had something that belongs to someone else. It's when these thoughts start multiplying and churning in one's mind, that they lead to sin. An old adage is a good description of this process:

"You can't prevent birds from flying over your head,
But You DON'T have to let them build a nest in your Hair".
