Genesis 4:1-14

11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;

12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

13 And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

15 And the Lord said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

16 And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

In the days before Cell Phones, Email, and Search Engines, there were "Phone Books". A Phone Book contained the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of everybody who had a phone. It was free to all, and to become "Unlisted" one had to pay a fee every month. This was because, if people didn't find you in the Phone Book, they would have to call "Information" and talk to a human operator. If the number was "Unlisted", the Operator would tell you what you already knew.

Since Phone Books were Alphabetical, people with similar names were all bunched together. For example, there might be several pages of "John Smiths". If you knew the address, or at least the town, you were better off. This is the basis of Today's TRUE Story.

In the 1950s, we would often get mail addressed to my Dad, Clayton, who had a very unusual name. Dad would innocently open the mail, and instantly recognize that the letter, or invoice, or whatever, was NOT for him. He did a little research (The Phone Book!) and found out that a man with his exact same unusual name lived about twenty miles away in Randolph, MA. Dad would tape the letter back up, write the correct address on the envelope, and hand it back to the mailman. This went on for YEARS.

Fast Forward to the 1980s. My younger sisters and I were in a Christian Rock Band that toured all over New England, and at a Coffee House in Haverhill, MA (about 60 miles away), my youngest sister met the Love of Her Life. They started dating, which involved the Commuter Rail and Public Transportation in Boston, because neither of them had a car.

When my sister introduced her boyfriend Donny to my Dad, Donny's face went ashen.

"I have an uncle with the EXACT same Name!" he exclaimed.

"Does he live in Randolph?" Dad asked. "I've been getting his mail for YEARS!"

Dad already knew that he wasn't related in any way to the Randolph man, so it was OK for Donny and my sister to be dating. The "Randolph Clayton" had also served in the US Navy and was a WW2 Veteran, just like my Dad. They are buried within sight of each other in the same section of the Bourne National Cemetery on Cape Cod, as they both died within a few weeks of each other.

Adam and Eve had many children, but the Bible focuses on two sons, Cain and Abel. Both had learned from their father Adam that there was a God in Heaven, and that there was a way to "commune" with Him, by means of a sacrifice. In the Garden, it was the creature that was slain to make garments for Adam and Eve. One of the FRiends of this Thread, norski, suggested it may have been a lamb that was slain in anticipation of the Messiah. In any case, the Fig Leaves DIDN'T do the job. They were unable to even cover up, much less atone, for sin.

I imagine Adam and Eve told the story of "Paradise Lost" over and over (long before Milton used that title😁), and so the kids knew that they had certain religious duties they had to perform. The way they did it had a lot to do with their Personalities. Today we'll talk about Abel, the younger brother.

Abel was a Shepherd. This puts him ahead of the "Hunter-Gatherer" phase of human existence. The Bible doesn't give us the size of his flock, but it may not have been very large, considering that Abel had to manage it by himself. Yet the Scriptures tell us that Abel took the first born of his flock and sacrificed it to God. The Word tells us that God "accepted" Abel's sacrifice. In other places in Scripture, this "acceptance" was indicated by Fire coming down from the sky and consuming the animal. Whatever method God used, He showed Abel (and the rest of his family) that the sacrifice was accepted. It must have been quite a spectacle!

Abel's Personality Traits can be described as Faithful, Loyal, Obedient to God's Word, Humble, and Grateful. No bad traits are listed, but I would add "Gullible" to that list. His happiness with God's Favor may have blinded him to the Jealousy that was burning in his own brother's heart.

My story today has nothing to do with the story of Cain and Abel, but, for some reason, it came to my mind. Perhaps it goes with the exile of Cain "East of Eden" where he found a wife.

Although they had different names, they were probably RELATED!

East Of Eden was also a movie with James Dean, based on a novel by John Steinbeck.

I had no idea about the Korean Series.

A lot of book and movie titles come from the Bible.

This is a perfect example.
