For many years, I worked in Nursing Homes, both as an Activities Director, and as a Freelance Musician. I noticed that, although the actual jobs remained the same, the titles changed over the years.

The "Head Nurse" became the "Director of Nursing Services". The "Nurse's Aide" became the "Nursing Assistant", and then, "The Certified Nursing Assistant", shortened to "CNA". My own job as "Activities Director" went through some permutations as well, from "Activities Director", to "Recreation Director", and finally, "Director of Recreational Services".

As "Director of Music" for Biker Church, I was also called "The Worship Leader", and even the Biblical "Chief Musician" (from Psalms). No matter what my title was, it was ALWAYS hard work. Fancy Titles don't guarantee a Corner Office in the Kingdom of God. 😁

Today, we'll be diverting from Adam briefly to talk about his wife Eve. We'll get back to Adam later, because we're not finished with him yet. However, let's take a moment to look at Eve's "Job Title".

First, I want to correct something. I've been merrily posting the Scriptures from The King James, but dutifully posting the Copyright Notice for the NIV! Perhaps, because we just finished Handel's Messiah, the Computer defaulted back to the KJV. Now that I look at the Scriptures in this Series, I realize that the KJV is the best translation to use for now, because the story of Adam and Eve is so familiar to us. That brings us back to Eve and her Job Description. In the KJV, she's called a "Helpmeet". That's an unfamiliar word to most of us, so we translate it in our minds as "Helpmate". This conjures up unfortunate imagery, like the "Handmaids" in Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel.

When all the Translations are a bit inadequate, it's best to look at the original Hebrew to get more insight into the relationship of Adam and Eve. The word we're looking at is עֵזֶר (ezer)STRONG'S 5828. This noun shows up all through the Bible and means Help, Helper, Assistant, and other positive qualities. It is even used to indicate Help from Heaven, ie: God Himself. (Ex. 18:4, Deut. 33:26, etc).

This would indicate a much more equal bond, along with equal responsibility, between Adam and Eve.

If Eve was a mere "handmaid", the Serpent wouldn't have bothered with her. Creatures with no responsibility have no accountability either.

Scripture indicates that Adam was given instructions regarding the Forbidden Fruit before Eve was created. God spoke to Adam with the prohibition, and Adam must have told Eve about it. Further reading shows that Eve wasn't alone when the serpent was tempting her. Adam was standing right there, maybe (my speculation) being amused at the conversation. He didn't hesitate to take a bite out of the fruit she offered to him. He didn't scold her, protect her, or chase the serpent away.

That's why God punished them BOTH.
