Over a half century ago (1960, I think) my parents rented a little cottage in Scituate, MA, on a road called "Town Way". It was right across the street from the Atlantic Ocean, and was a typical, humble Cape-Cod-Style wooden house, like all the others on the street. We were only there a week, but , even at the age of 8 I managed to get myself a role in a community "show". That week was very special in my memory.

In 1978, a huge Blizzard hit the Northeast, and Town Way was wiped out. Every house was flattened. The week in Scituate all went into the "Memory Hole" and Life went on. I am sure that the folks who lost their homes wanted to rebuild, but opposition from environmentalists, insurance companies, and government red-tape prevented it.

A few years ago, I got on the Harley and went in search of Town Way. It looked like a road was still there from the GPS map, so I was eager to cruise down Memory Lane and see what development had taken place in the last 40 years since the Blizzard.

As I got closer and closer to the road on the map, the "neighborhood" got more and more toney and exclusive. "NO TRESPASSING" AND "DO NOT ENTER" signs prevailed, and when I finally got to Town Way, the road had become unpaved, filled with rocks, an impassible for anything but a four-wheel drive vehicle. A large sign saying "PRIVATE" adorned the opening to the street.

I was able to at least look at the beach that had been my childhood playground. The neighborhood Cape-Style houses were replaced with a few Mansions that were build wide apart to prevent any further development. I was reminded of certain Hollywood-types who oppose anything that might "harm the environment" and then seize it for themselves.

Just last Summer, I was disheartened to find out that another iconic house from my teenage summers had to be demolished due to termite damage. That hurt even more than the Scituate House. Nothing lasts Forever. This world is totally perishable.

I want to correct something I wrote yesterday. Here is what I wrote:

"While Acts One and Two of Handel's Messiah deal with the past, Act Three sings of the future.

I would like to correct that, as Act Two is about the Death, Burial, and Resurrection of the Messiah, but it is also about the spread of the Gospel. That's still going on. So let's see it this way:

Act One is about the Past..
Act Two is about the Present.
and
Act Three is about the Future.

That actually makes more sense. And now, on to the next portion, a Duet between an Alto and a Tenor..

There is a saying that the only things you can be sure of are "Death and Taxes". Certainly, the most feared Branch of our government is not the Military, the CIA, or Law Enforcement, but the IRS! There is an entire industry built around calculating tax returns, and defending citizens against audits. Recent revelations about the IRS have made this Agency of our Government seem more threatening.

However, there is something even MORE frightening, and UNIVERSALLY feared than Taxes. This FEAR is the Foundation and Origin of an entire Culture of myth, legend, horror stories and movies, over-the-top fitness obsessions, eating disorders and fads, health insurance fraud and lack thereof, fake cures and health food crazes, and snake-oil salesmen. That fear, of course, is the Fear of DEATH. It seems to be hard-wired into us, and has been part of humanity since Creation.

We who believe probably still have that fear lurking beneath the surface, yet the Scripture tells us that we no longer need to fear Death. Death is a result of the Fall, and we have been redeemed from that Curse. Death is merely a transition to a higher place. It is swallowed up by Victory. The sting has been removed. Praise Be to God.
