The Scriptures in Handel’s “Messiah”
Psalm 69:21

21 They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

Lamentations 1:12 12 Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the Lord hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Heavenly Father,
Blessed Are You, Oh LORD,
Our God, King of The Universe!
You Alone Are Worthy of Worship and Praise.
You Alone Are Holy,
You Alone Are The Almighty,
You Alone Are the One True God!
Ancient of Days,
Rock of All Ages,
El Shaddai,
All Sufficient,
Our Great Provider and Sovereign Lord,
How Excellent is Your Holy Name Over All the Earth!
How We Love You,
And Bless Your Holy Name.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

”The Greatest Of these Is Love.”

If you would like to be on or off the Daily Ping List, please let me know.

My recordings of The Messiah all have a Soprano singing these lines. However, Handel revised and "tweaked" his score many times depending upon the abilities of his soloists and other factors. Today's Video has it sung by a Tenor, which I find very satisfying.

The Scriptures are extremely sad, and come from Psalms and Lamentations.

Psalms is a favorite Book for many, but Lamentations isn't popular at all. There are five long songs in Lamentations, all mourning the Destruction of Solomon's Temple and the Captivity of the Jews, perpetrated by the Babylonians. This is considered one of the most tragic events in the History of the Jewish People and is commemorated on the 9th Day of Av every year. (By a strange coincidence, many horrible events took place on this same date throughout History) Here is what Chabad says about 9th Day of Av..

Why do you think I would bring up an interesting correlation between Handel's Messiah and a Jewish Day of Mourning? Well, I did it because Charles Jennens did it by including this little verse from Lamentations.

Perhaps Jennens equated the Death and Burial of Jesus with the Destruction of Solomon's Temple. Perhaps he included this Verse to simulate the Mourning and Sorrow of Jesus's Mother, Joseph of Aramethea, and the other disciples who prepared Jesus for Burial after His cruel Death.

Whatever his reason, it is here in the Libretto, and whether it is sung by a Soprano or a Tenor, it tears at the heart.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

”Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.” (Hosea 6:3 NIV)

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Amen !!! <>< (NOTE:We must pray this daily from here on out. Getting obvious now!)

Psalm 91

1 You who live in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,*
2 will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress;
my God, in whom I trust.’
3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence;
4 he will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night,
or the arrow that flies by day,
6 or the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
or the destruction that wastes at noonday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only look with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.

9 Because you have made the Lord your refuge,*
the Most High your dwelling-place,
10 no evil shall befall you,
no scourge come near your tent.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the adder,
the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot.

14 Those who love me, I will deliver;
I will protect those who know my name.
15 When they call to me, I will answer them;
I will be with them in trouble,
I will rescue them and honour them.
16 With long life I will satisfy them,
and show them my salvation.

Gall. I’ve always wondered what that is.

“In the Bible, the word gall most often refers to a bitter-tasting substance made of a plant such as wormwood or myrrh. The most famous biblical use of the word gall is in reference to a drink given to Jesus on the cross. Matthew 27:34 says that, as Jesus was being crucified, the Roman soldiers offered “wine to drink, mixed with gall.” Mark 15:23 specifies that the bitterness in the wine was due to the presence of myrrh. Wine mixed with bitter herbs or myrrh created a potion that dulled the sense of pain. The mixture of sour wine and gall was often given to the suffering to ease their pain in death.

Jesus refused this gall-laced concoction after He tasted it and realized what it was (Mark 15:23; John 19:29). In a supernatural display of courage, the Son of Man rejected anything that would numb the suffering He endured for our salvation. ...”
