Our Father,
Who Art in Heaven
How Excellent is Your Name over all the Earth!
You Are Our Peace,
When the Whole World seems to be against us,
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise And Worship,
For You Alone Are The Wonderful Counselor,
Wise, Omniscient, and Full of Grace and Compassion.
You Are the Almighty God!
Omnipotent and On The Throne!
You Are the Everlasting Father,

November 22 comes every year, and every time it rolls around, I remember that day as a day when my eyes were opened. I wrote this on another November 22nd, some years ago, and updated it for today:

Sixty-Two years ago today, I sat in a Sixth-Grade classroom, listening to the teacher go on and on about something I don't remember, when another teacher burst into the room and said, "All of you, go home NOW! The President has been SHOT!" (Back in those days, they did not have "Lockdown" or "Shelter in Place").

So we kids piled out of the room, and got on the public transportation to go home. We all figured this was "The Big One" and I was weeping on the bus. So was everyone else, and nobody knew what was going on, as there were no cell phones or internet back then. I got off the bus, took the forbidden railroad route and scrambled down the embankment to get home as quickly as possible, and saw that, in spite of the brisk November weather, everybody in the neighborhood was standing on the front porch, crying their eyes out.

The following days were even more shocking, as we saw Jack Ruby kill Oswald, Walter Cronkite crying on camera, and days of nothing but the Kennedy Funeral. To make matters worse, my family had just bought a new house to accommodate our ever growing family (Mom was pregnant with her sixth child) and moving day was the same day as the Funeral. Since it was a National Day of Mourning, there would be no Utilities installed or furniture delivered, and it was RAINING. Mom had the five of us in the empty house, with no furniture except the B & W TV, Dad (having some kind of job that involved National Security) was not home, and we had no refrigerator yet and no food.

Mom looked out into the rainy back yard and saw a soggy picnic table. Luckily, it was the kind with benches that were not part of its construction, so the four oldest kids (me being the oldest at 11), schlepped the picnic table into the kitchen and wiped it down. Then, I got some money from Mom and walked to the ONLY open convenience store and bought a quart of milk, a loaf of Wonder bread, a can of Tuna, and a small jar of Mayonnaise. By the time I got home with the food, my brother had already befriended the kid across the street, and he joined us for Milk and Cold Tuna Sandwiches by the Flickering Light of the Kennedy Funeral.

Suddenly, around 6:00PM, after the sun went down, everybody arrived at once; Dad, The Moving Truck, The Telephone Installer, The Locksmith, The Gas Man, and Who Knows Who Else. That night, we had beds to sleep in, telephone service, a stove that now worked, and a refrigerator.

And, for the first time in my life...I had MY OWN ROOM.

November 22, 1963 was the day I became a young woman, and a little girl no more. Shortly thereafter, my body caught up with my mind, and my Teenage years began. I had a very hard time as a teenager, because, like James Dean, I was a "Rebel Without a Cause"...or perhaps, like Tom Petty sang, "A Rebel Without a Clue". In any case, the whole experience was the demarcation in my life from childhood to adulthood...a loss of innocence... because if the President could be killed just like that, how could I be safe?

This day in History, I believe, also changed the course of America. One wonders if the "hippie movement", the "Sexual Revolution", or the proliferation of the Left would have gone the same way. It could have been maybe different, maybe better, maybe worse, but who knows. It was, what is known in modern parlance, "A Black Swan Event".

During that time however, and ever since, The Arm of the Lord has been a constant. America was not destroyed with the Assassination, or by the subsequent rebellions that followed. Every November 22nd I am reminded of that.

It is a brief Recitative, from Isaiah, and speaks of the Messiah's Ministry on Earth.

In the Gospel of Luke, we see John the Baptist sitting in jail, and becoming discouraged. He sends his disciples to Jesus with an awkward question: "Are YOU the Messiah, or should we be looking for somebody else?"This Scripture is quoted in Jesus's answer to His Cousin. It is the Confirmation of His Mission and Identity. (Luke 7:22)

All of us have doubts at one time or another. The story in the Gospel not only shows us that God understands, but that the Word of God (Scripture) is a wonderful antidote for those feelings.

"Feelings" are not "Faith". Faith is what it is in spite of our "Feelings". As it says in Hebrews 11, "Faith is the substance of things that we can't see.

Once again, we are treated to Charles Jennens’ skillful juxtaposition of Old and New Testament Scriptures and of how one defines and fulfills the other.

Nov. 22 1963, one of those fateful days that you will never forget, never forget where you were or what you were doing.

I wasn’t feeling well so I stayed home from school.

Mom said if you feel up to it, get some ironing done.

Everything had to be ironed back then except our underwear.

I set up the ironing board in front of the TV and was ironing and watching when all of a sudden, the program was interrupted by a newsperson saying the President had been shot in Dallas, TX.

I ran to the phone to call my mom who was at work.

Then I watched Walter Cronkite as he was crying tell me the news I dreaded to hear, the President was dead.

Life changed for me too, ML.
