The Literal Week
Patriarchs and Prophets (book) ^ | 1890 | Ellen White

Posted on 11/17/2025 5:13:44 AM PST by vespa300

Like the Sabbath, the week originated at creation, and it has been preserved and brought down to us through Bible history. God Himself measured off the first week as a sample for successive weeks to the close of time. Like every other, it consisted of seven literal days. Six days were employed in the work of creation; upon the seventh, God rested, and He then blessed this day and set it apart as a day of rest for man.

In the law given from Sinai, God recognized the week, and the facts upon which it is based. After giving the command, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy,” and specifying what shall be done on the six days, and what shall not be done on the seventh, He states the reason for thus observing the week, by pointing back to His own example: “For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.” Exodus 20:8-11. This reason appears beautiful and forcible when we understand the days of creation to be literal. The first six days of each week are given to man for labor, because God employed the same period of the first week in the work of creation. On the seventh day man is to refrain from labor, in commemoration of the Creator’s rest.

But the assumption that the events of the first week required thousands upon thousands of years, strikes directly at the foundation of the fourth commandment.

She adds in this chapter:

It is one of Satan’s devices to lead the people to accept the fables of infidelity; for he can thus obscure the law of God, in itself very plain, and embolden men to rebel against the divine government. His efforts are especially directed against the fourth commandment, because it so clearly points to the living God, the Maker of the heavens and the earth.

There is a constant effort made to explain the work of creation as the result of natural causes; and human reasoning is accepted even by professed Christians, in opposition to plain Scripture facts. There are many who oppose the investigation of the prophecies, especially those of Daniel and the Revelation, declaring them to be so obscure that we cannot understand them; yet these very persons eagerly receive the suppositions of geologists, in contradiction of the Mosaic record. But if that which God has revealed is so difficult to understand, how inconsistent it is to accept mere suppositions in regard to that which He has not revealed!

Wow..what a deep and profound statement she makes.

Satan wants to obscure God’s law.....so he makes a special effort to attack the 4th commandment because the 4th commandment points to the Living God, the maker of heaven and earth.

Wow...Evolution/Darwinism would not exist if people accepted the 4th commandment. And of course the 4th commandment reveals the great false counterfeit Christian power.

Amazing. 2 great deceptions and lies utterly exposed by the 4th commandment.

Charlie Kirk’s book will be out in a few weeks. It’s about the 7th day Sabbath and how it transformed his life. Deep subject. Very deep and profound.

They hate God’s law and the Sabbath. Therefore, they hate the Lord of the Sabbath.

Did He have to rest, if so why? If not, why did He?

____They hate God’s law and the Sabbath. Therefore, they hate the Lord of the Sabbath.___

I actually believe many will eventually accept the 7th day Sabbath. Those who desire the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Even some here.

Charlie Kirk found it. I think God is going to do a mighty work in these last days because we know what prophecy says about the AntiChrist and how her wound has healed and she hates the Seventh day Sabbath more than all. It exposes her presumed authority to tamper with God’s holy law.

Never tamper with God’s holy law. It’s not a healthy thing to do. I have received private messages here telling me how much they appreciate bringing this to their attention.

And they notice the hostility from some here towards the Sabbath and those who keep it. It’s not a good look for those who do that.

I believe the underlying attitude of those who will accept the mark of the beast......not only will center on God’s law....but it will manifest itself in religious intolerance.

There is a great awful catastrophic time coming to this earth. The winds of strife about to be let loose. We are talking calamaties that will kill a third of the earth.

People ruined.... a time of desperation such as never seen. Like a commercial jet airliner going down.....

And when that happenes....everyone in the plane prays......they seek God. Such will be the end time.....and then she will have what she so desires....this counterfeit power and her counterfeit law, the world begging her to make it stop. She is the Link to God.....so the world thinks.

A mammoth deception....and when all else fails.....a day must be enforced. God’s law, as they have edited it , must be enforced.

And when that fails.....somebody must be blamed. Those who are not following her....Daniel 6:5 is telling. Jesus said church/state .Mark 13:9 he puts church/state in the same text.

It’s coming. Most are gonna fall for this mammoth deception....but God will have a people. A minority who “keep the commandments of God”.....even though the dragon makes war on them....Amen.

-____Did He have to rest, if so why? If not, why did He?____

Well, virtually every Bible Scholar I have read agree...the word for “rest” here means simply to cease. He ceased from his work of creation after 6 days. All was complete and all was perfect.

I think you would agree. God does does not need to rest. But he gave us an example of how to live our lives. He could have created everything in one second. He’s God.

But as the writer states.....the Literal Week originates at creation for us to pattern our lives after.

We, the human race, are the reason for the universe. That is such a difference from evolution which essentially says we are an accident from some primordial soup somewhere. Over billions of years and wala.....people.

The Bible could not be more in contrast to that. Not only is the human race not an accident of the universe.....we are the reason for the universe. Even Angels exist for us. They are called ministering spirits.

Ever notice by the way...the very last thing God “makes” is the Sabbath? why didn’t he just stop after he made man on the 6th day? Why have a 7th day?

Sabbath is both a verb and a noun. And Jesus said the Sabbath was MADE for man. Mark 2:27. It’s the last thing he made during creation week...a literal week. Hope this helps brother.....or sister.

In my funky brain, the Torah is literally G-d’s word, is literally true in its stories, commandments (613!) and correct view of the world.

In ADDITION, I enjoy seeing how the Torah law works itself out Anthropologically. Jews have been around near forever because it WORKS.

Take Shabbat. Jews may have been so particularly effective on the planet in part because they were required to take a day off. To think, reflect, express gratitude and REST. To come back reinvigorated after Shabbat is a competitive advantage.

G-d got it all right. Ignore at your peril.

“Well, virtually every Bible Scholar I have read agree...the word for “rest” here means simply to cease. “

That’s the problem I see with the various versions/translations of the Bible. The words used don’t necessarily convey what they seem to at first examination, yet people emphasize them like they do.

Otherwise, a satisfactory answer.

All folks from everywhere argue a week, a week is a thousand days, etc ...

I’ve worked 6on 1 off on 12 hour shifts, I:be done the 2 days,,2 swing, 2 mid shift, 2 off.
Nothing beats 5 days on a shift, with 2 days off.
I have worked split weeks, no fun.
(Never mind all those military alert times that go days with no break.

.........

It isn’t being preserved by Daniel’s 4th Beast, Ellen White.

It has been counterfeited by Daniel’s 4th Beast, Ellen White.

You fell for it.

Your followers fell for it.

Islam fell for it.
Judaism fell for it.
Christianity fell for it.

That’s why it says Satan deceives the whole world.

Especially those who reject the Passover Lamb.
Them especially.

I'm uncomfortable assigning a timeframe for creation from the Genesis text alone. The Hebrew words for "day", "evening", and "morning" have multiple definitions. It could literally mean six 24-hour days (not counting the rest "day"). It could also literally mean six eras of unspecified length, with each era having a beginning point or phase and an ending phase.

I'm cool with a respectful discussion on the possibilities of each. But I'm not cool with one side saying someone's not a Bible believer unless they apply the same eisegesis.

I meant to say that I don’t subscribe to Ellen White’s religeon, but I do agree with the word of God, and subscribe to the sabbath according to what Moses taught.

___The Pharisees also majored on the minors.___

Actually, they majored on their own Sabbath day appendages. Their petty rules.

Jesus comes along and throws out the bathwater...but not the baby. Seems today, most have thrown out the baby with the bathwater.

Jesus restores the longest largest commandment to it’s “MAJOR” and proper place. Amen.

Reminds me of the joke:

A man asks God, “What’s a million years to you?”

God says, “A second.”

Then the man asks God, “What’s a million dollars to you?”

God says, “A penny.”

Then the man asks God, “Well then, can I have a penny?”

And God said, “Sure, just give me a second.”

Thank you. With regard to Ellen White, I think most people have a misunderstanding of how Adventists view her. She is not equal to the Bible, she is not canon, she never even referred to herself as a prophet.

She is a lesser light that leads us to the greater light..the Bible.

We test everything, including what she wrote...to the Bible.

That being said.....in my opinion, and again, outside of the Bible, I have never read any noncanical write who matches her knowledge, articulation, wisdom, Bible commentary, and when I test what she wrote on prophetic detail.....when I test it to the Bible....as a Protestant......I see harmony.

By the way she said God alone is infallible. I could not belong to any church that views itself as infallible.

Thank you again. And God bless you.

_____I’m cool with a respectful discussion on the possibilities of each. But I’m not cool with one side saying someone’s not a Bible believer unless they apply the same eisegesis.____

First, I appreciate your civility and tone.

With regard to assigning a timeframe for creation, it is my opinion that inspired record (The Bible) is very consistent on things such as the literal 24 hour period, week, etc.

We see it time and time again throughout scripture. The 4th commandment, the miracle God worked each Friday for 40 years in supplying twice manna so the SAbbath could be kept, Jesus himself as his “custom was” in the temple each Sabbath, Jesus stating the Sabbath day was made for man, After his death, on the “Preparation day” Friday......John in Revelation referring to the “Lord’s day”.....and even the immortality of the weekly Sabbath since we see it in the new earth where all flesh will come before God each Sabbath....”from Sabbath unto Sabbath” Isaiah 66.

Same with the literal week.....which is measured by the Sabbath day. It begins anew after the SAbbath day......

I think one of the greatest proofs of scripture is in fact the 7 day literal week. Unlike the 24 hour day, the month, and the year.....which are measured by a naturally occuring event..rotation, new moon, and revolution around the sun.....we see no such thing with regard to the literal 7 day week.

Other than.....creation week which concludes on the 7th day.

That is my opinion.

Again, we can agree to disagree but we don’t have to be disagreeable which for some, it seems that is just how they prefer to be. I appreciate your tone and civility. God bless you.
