Today's Scripture is sung by the Bass as a Recititve followed by an "Air" or "Aria". They go together, and you can listen to it HERE..

I would like to take this moment to describe something very special about Handel's treatment of Jennins' Lyrics. Handel uses the music to paint a picture. Here, the text is describing "Darkness covering the earth". A very dark voice (not just a baritone, but a BASS!) wavers between two low notes that are very close together on the scale, a half-step. This is the same interval used by Composer John Williams in his iconic Shark Theme in JAWS. (Residents of Boston know this theme very well, as Williams was conductor of The Boston Pops for years). Remember, Handel did it 284 years ago, and it is very effective in conveying Darkness.

As we go through this Wonderful Work bit by bit, we will see many more of these "Musical Paintings" as we go along. In fact, even though I have listened to it hundreds of times, I am still discovering new ones.
