🇺🇸Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem 🇮🇱(11/11/25)[Prayer]

The Scriptures in Handel’s “Messiah”
Isaiah 40:1-3

40 Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.

2 Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins.

3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Holy Bible, The King James Version

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
We Come before You in Prayer
For we know That You Are the Potter,
And We Are the Clay
We pray that we will always be supple and yielding to Your touch
So That You will form us into Your Image.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

”The Greatest Of these Is Love.”

In 2024, we started the New Year with Handel's Messiah, one of my favorite pieces of Classical Music.

Christmas is around 50 days away, and, there are about 50 "pieces" in Handel's Messiah, so I would like to welcome the Christmas Season with this Beautiful Work. Rather than analyze the music, though, we can look at the Scriptures that were used to provide the Lyrics.

Unlike other adaptations of Scripture that comprise Hymns, Handel's Messiah seems to lift them verbatim from the Bible.

Speakers on? Great. Let's get started. We are going to look at the Scriptures that were chosen for one of the most beloved pieces of Classical Music, Handel's "Messiah".. This towering work was written, not for Church, but for the Concert Stage. Charles Jennens wrote the libretto, and like many great songwriting teams, turned the lyrics over to Handel to have the music aligned with the lyrics. (As many songrwriters will attest, it is easier to put words to music than the other way around, but it is usually done this way.) Jennens was not entirely delighted with the "handeling" of his libretto, and was quite blunt about it. Here is what he said:

"I shalled show you a collection I gave Handel, call'd Messiah, which I value highly, & he has made a fine entertainment of it, tho' not near so good as he might and ought to have done" (Letter of Charles Jennens to Edward Holdsworth, 30 August 1745)

Although that is not exactly a Five Star Review, Handel's work has endured for nearly 300 years. Jennens' work has lasted even longer, since his lyrics are from the Bible itself.

Like an Opera, "Messiah" opens with a short Overture.

Then a Lone Tenor, like a Voice crying in the Wilderness, Sings,"Comfort Ye My People""Comfort Ye My People" from Isaiah 40:1-5. Enjoy.

Thanks! The “Comfort Ye My People” is mind blowing. The singer is perfect. How does he sing like that starting around 3:30.

I see Handel had to tread lightly in composing to avoid accusations of blasphemy. What a different world we live in now where blasphemy and mocking God is popular and encouraged.

Yes...it was considered “Blasphemy” to have an actor portray Jesus, even in song.

The Bach Cantatas are a bit different , as they were composed FOR church services, rather than as “entertianment”.

If Handel’s Messiah and Bach Cantatas were the only music in the world, I probably could deal with that. LOL!

But we, as humans, have een BLESSED with so much Music, that, probably, none of us will ever get to hear it ALL.
