Papua New Guinea’s Parliament has made a historic decision to amend the country’s Constitution, formally declaring its Christian identity while preserving the freedom to practice other religions. The amendment, approved by a strong majority of 80-4, will include references to Christianity in the Constitution’s Preamble. The updated wording recognizes “God, the Father; Jesus Christ, the Son; and Holy Spirit, as our Creator and Sustainer of the entire universe and the source of our powers and authorities.” Christianity will also be acknowledged in the Fifth Goal of the Preamble, with Section 1 affirming the nation’s Christian identity, and the Bible being officially recognized as a national symbol under Section 3. [ . . . ] With parliamentary approval now finalized, the amendment will go through the necessary legal procedures before being enacted into law. This marks a significant moment in Papua New Guinea’s history, solidifying its Christian heritage while continuing to uphold the constitutional commitment to religious freedom.

PNG is one of the most violent, dangerous nations on earth.

I know someone who used to visit a factory there - armed convoy at the plane and they stop for nothing.

Villagers accuse women of witchcraft when someone is ill and they need a scapegoat. Infection, bad luck, no, it must be malevolence. These women are beaten, tortured, raped, killed.

Well, maybe that’s 16th c. Europe. Unquestionably Christian.

Missionaries made an impact over many years and helped build infrastructure, e.g. schools, hospitals.

Papua New Guinea has a long history of extreme fragmentation and internecine tribal warfare, predating the arrival of missionaries. Likewise the witchcraft and accusations thereof long predate Christianity. These leaders recognize that Christianity is the solution to their troubles.

I just have this imagine of the Biden family maybe 70 years ago at family gatherings, sitting around and rolling out the family lies, including the woeful tale of Uncle Bosie

No doubt, Papua New Guinea has challenges. It is a lower middle income country, with about 20 percent of its population living in extreme poverty. Its scores on political and economic freedom are disappointing. Its murder rate is lower than it had been, but is falling.

This acknowledgement of the country as Christian should help the people continue to make progress. The introduction of Christianity to the country has been instrumental in breaking down tribal differences, unifying the country, ending cannibalism, polygamy and other such practices. Today, the vast majority of the people of the country adhere to one or another form of Christianity.

The neo-cons thought they could transform a country from primitive to democratic overnight. They were wrong and we paid a huge price finding out. A free, prosperous and democratic country takes a long while to come about. Christian belief that we are all made in the image of God and, therefore, imbued by our Creator with certain inalienable rights, is a very good foundation for society. However - while the use of force suppress evil is a good thing - embracing the principles of Christianity ultimately must come from within.

Praise be to God who has blessed us with his laws and who has provided for us atonement in his only begotten son. May we, in America, remember the source of our own freedom and prosperity.

Not a terribly surprising outcome given that 95% of the country is Christian.

Thank you for posting this. (Detail: This article is about 7 months old (March 2025). Not a big deal, the article sent me to Wikipedia to read about PNG, which was a fascinating diversion.)

PNG has 837 recognized languages. That's remarkable also.

The world has dozens of Muslim countries, and this is unremarkable. The world should equally fail to remark Christian countries or a Jewish country or a Buddhist country.

Personally, I’m conflicted about the correlation of a country with a religion, but it’s a thing in the world, so it should be an EQUAL thing in the world, not okay for some religions but badbadbad for others.
