Pope Leo XIV took aim Wednesday at climate skeptics who “ridicule those who speak of global warming,” as he strongly embraced Pope Francis’ environmental legacy and made it his own in some of his strongest and most extensive comments to date.
Leo presided over a 10th anniversary celebration of Francis’ landmark ecological encyclical, Laudato si’, at a global gathering held at Castel Gandolfo, the pope’s traditional summer residence south of Rome. That encyclical cast care for the planet as an urgent and existential moral concern, and launched a global grassroots movement to advocate for caring for God’s creation and the peoples most harmed by its exploitation.
Leo told the estimated 1,000 representatives from environmental and indigenous groups that they needed to pressure national governments to develop tougher standards to mitigate the damage already done. He said he hoped the upcoming U.N. climate conference “will listen to the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor.”
He didn’t name names, but history’s first American pope spoke just days after U.S. President Donald Trump complained to the U.N. General Assembly about the “con job” of global warming. Trump has long been a critic of climate science and polices aimed at helping the world transition to green energies such wind and solar power.
Leo quoted Francis’ apostolic exhortation Laudate Deum, published in 2023, in which the Argentine pope shamed and challenged world leaders ahead of a U.N. conference to commit to binding targets to slow climate change before it’s too late.
Citing Francis’ text, Leo recalled that some leaders had chosen to “deride the evident signs of climate change, to ridicule those who speak of global warming and even to blame the poor for the very thing that affects them most.”
Leo called for a change of heart to truly embrace the environmental cause, and said any Christian should be on board.
“We cannot love God, whom we cannot see, while despising his creatures. Nor can we call ourselves disciples of Jesus Christ without participating in his outlook on creation and his care for all that is fragile and wounded,” he said, presiding on a stage that featured a huge hunk of a melting glacier from Greenland and tropical ferns.
Leo has strongly taken up Francis’ ecological mantle, giving his blessing to a Vatican plan to turn an agricultural field north of Rome into a vast solar farm. Once it is up and running, the farm is expected to make the Vatican City the world’s first carbon-neutral state.

So now in the last two days, Pope Leo has said one must be pro-illegal invasions, anti-death penalty and pro-treehuggers.
And who, exactly, has been blaming the the poor for climate fluctuations?
Ping
Sounds like SOMEbody found Pope Leo’s secret videotape library.
Red Pope II
Frank II
LEO....we hardly knew ya! HOLY up, LEO!!! THis CRAP is from the DEVIL!!
He should worry about his own past cover up of sex abuse. Stay out of US Politics
Suffer the little greenies, and I will give them carbon credits
Yes. Someone should remind him that popes haven’t had temporal power for about 500 years or so.
apparently the Pope has no faith that God is in control of the climate.
Quite a disappointment. We had been hoping the Vatican would return to having a Catholic Pope, but, guess not.
Sad to say about Leo that you don’t even have to be very smart to understand the lies that make up climate change argument. Anyone who is curious and has access to the web can find out.
Another phony Pope!
If only the Pope had read the Bible where Jesus calmed the sea of Galilee.
,,, no, I don't think it's blackmail, more a guarantee that if he plays the UN game he'll be leader of the singularly permitted one world church.
Or caused the earth to pause its rotation for a day. Or to part the Red Sea. Or the plagues. Or to make an ax head float in a river. Etc.
Does anyone really care what the Pope thinks?
All fun and games until the muzzies tear down the walls, loot the treasures, and slaughter everyone in the vatican.
Ya’ll should have heard what he said equating abortion/immigration debates.
He’s an utter embarrassment. A pathetic man overcome with his humanness - and leftism - and demonstrable failure as leader of the Catholic Church.
Leo as Robert Prevost spent 20 years in Peru, the home of liberation theology. So he had to be severely immersed in the hard left doctrines. Like Bergoglio before him, he is ill-suited to assess political reality accurately.
