Healing of the Water

19 The people of the city said to Elisha, “Look, our lord, this town is well situated, as you can see, but the water is bad and the land is unproductive.”

20 “Bring me a new bowl,” he said, “and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him.

21 Then he went out to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying, “This is what the Lord says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’” 22 And the water has remained pure to this day, according to the word Elisha had spoken.

A few days ago, I told the story of my Mom's Miracle from a Stroke at the age of 39. At the time, the prevailing medical treatment for a stroke was to put the patient on a strict Salt-Free Diet. Suddenly, Mom's Irish-American "Cuisine" became so bland that I couldn't stand it. Beef Stew, Shepherd's Pie, Spaghetti Sauce, and everything else tasted the same. Salt was my FAVORITE Flavor...and now it was gone.

Dad, who also loved salt, brought home all kinds of vile concoctions known as "Salt Substitute". Mostly these were mixtures of various herbs and spices, but sometimes they were chemicals that only looked like salt. They tasted like something you would scrape off the bottom of a downtown pier.

Perhaps that explains my passion for salty snacks. Popcorn, Potato Chips, Mixed Nuts, Edamame encrusted with coarse salt, Bacon, Pastrami, Salty Crackers, you name it. In the seventh grade, my Chinese friend would obtain "Preserved Plums" for me from Chinatown. These were like a solid gumball-sized lump of pure SALT, with the remnants of a dried plum buried within. Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm.

While my Salt Fetish" could be described as "extreme", the Medical Establishment is now questioning the Salt-Free Diet as a treatment for hypertension. In fact, I know at least two people who were rushed to the ER because of dangerously LOW sodium levels. We were created out of earth, and the Earth is made up of water, dirt, and SALT.

Salt is a disinfectant and a preservative. In ancient times, with no refrigeration, salt was used to preserve meat, fish, and other foods. Roman Soldiers received packets of salt as part of their salary (hence the word that we still use today), and Jesus called us "The Salt of the Earth." Two of my sisters and I were in a contemporary Christian Band for seven years back in the 1980s called "SALT". (We were pretty good!). By playing Rock Music with Scriptural Lyrics, we hoped to reach kids who would never listen to traditional Worship Music. Hence, the name.

Pouring some salt into a poison water supply would probably not be enough to purify the water and make it potable. Elisha's use of the salt was symbolic, and the miracle belonged to God. There is a spring near Jericho that claims to be this water supply. It's safe to drink.

Btw, a big YES on the salt!
My family’s physician is always telling us to eat MORE SALT!
Despite us eating and loving salt all the time. I think because we eat mostly home cooking, it might be a little less than average maybe? Or maybe the coffee helps us to eliminate too much, laf.

Anyways, yes, too little can kill you.
Think of the animals that instinctly travel miles to get to salt. Our bodies require it so we crave it.
