Four churchgoers have died, with at least eight more injured and others potentially unaccounted for after a gunman set fire to a Mormon church in Michigan and began shooting at congregants.
The shooter, who was killed by police at the scene, has been identified as 40-year-old Iraq War veteran Thomas Jacob Sanford.
Sanford opened fire on hundreds of people, including children, who had gathered for a service at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc about 10.25am on Sunday.
Police confirmed in an 8pm press conference that two of the victims died from gunshot wounds, while another two bodies were found in the burnt-out church after the flames were extinguished.
Authorities admitted there are an 'unknown number' of churchgoers who remain unaccounted for, and have asked families who are still missing loved ones to get in touch with them.
The church has not yet been entirely cleared, and first responders are still searching for bodies.
Sanford allegedly used 'an accelerant of some sort', believed to be gasoline, before he lit the church on fire. Authorities confirmed they had located explosive devices, but would not confirm whether they were used to start the blaze.
Reuben Coleman, the acting special agent in charge of the FBI Detroit field office, said the agency is now leading the investigation and considers it 'an act of targeted violence.'

Charlie Kirk’s death is what drove this guy over the edge (plus whatever else going on in personal like sick kid and PTSD)
Maybe retaliating against Mormons? Who knows? I am not sure I understand the sequence of events. Had he planted bombs previously, before the truck ramming and setting fire? What is the info about additional bomb threats later in the day, that I heard? There was a “press conference” on CNN, and the main news the person holding it had was to thank all of the LEOs and 1st responders, etc., which is noble... but she acted like that was the only reason for speaking to the press at that time.

Makes it hard to imagine a motive. Whatever it is, his likely mental illness and drug use (prescription or otherwise) amplified things an order of magnitude.

Sounds like we don’t have a good handle on what motivated this killer. I’ll restrict myself to pointing out that we have a lot of military veterans with PTSD from all the foreign adventures the globalist elites keep using up our troops on. When you can fight with a clear conscience you don’t develop what ex-SEAL Ephraim Mattos calls “moral injury” (cf. his book City of Death) which contributes to these sorts of messed up, guilt-ridden heads. But many veterans have a conflicted sense of what they were doing and why in their overseas tours of duty. That needs to be stopped.
