🇺🇸Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem 🇮🇱(9/28/25)[Prayer]

Water, Rivers, and Streams in the Bible
1 Kings 18:16-40

Elijah on Mount Carmel

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”

18 “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals. 19 Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel. 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”

But the people said nothing.

22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. 23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by fire—he is God.”

Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”

25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” 26 So they took the bull given them and prepared it.

Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.

27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.” 28 So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. 29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.

30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.” 32 With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs[a] of seed. 33 He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”

34 “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.

“Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time. 35 The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.

36 At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. 37 Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”

38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.

39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!”

40 Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.

The Following Story is True. Everybody in the Story, including the Nursing Home where I heard it, are gone. At first, it doesn't seem to have anything to do with Today's Bible Passage, but stick with me:

Back in the early 80s, I was the Activities Director in a Kosher Nursing Home. Today's story came to me by way of a a very elderly lady named Bessie, who could still sew a fine seam on our big industrial Singer Sewing Machine in the rec room.

Back in the early Twentieth Century, Bessie worked with all her sisters, cousins, and aunties in a big sweatshop in the Garment District. There was no union, conditions were awful, and the ladies were paid for "piecework", meaning if they did not produce, they did not get paid. The way they kept track of production was with a "Bundle" of a dozen shirts, tied up with string and tagged with the worker's name. Fifteen of the ladies were from the same Jewish Community in the West End, and they all knew each other. All day long, they toiled to get their "Bundle" completed with the dozen shirts.

Ilsa, however, was a lost cause. She was probably only 15 years old, and couldn't stitch her way out of a paper bag. Sleeves were put in backwards, collars askew, and threads left hanging, such a mess! Ilsa helped support her family and would get instantly fired if the Big Boss got a load of her Bundle. The other ladies cared for her, but what could they do?

Then Bessie got an idea. She proposed that the other ladies in her corner of the shop each make one more shirt each day and put together a dozen for Ilsa. They weren't cheating the business, because the shop would still get the required dozen with Ilsa's name tag and make their profit. All the girls agreed to do this, even though it meant working harder, but there was still the matter of Ilsa's own incriminating Bundle sitting on her machine. There it sat, and the Big Boss was about to come in and collect the Bundles.

"Kvick!" Bessie urged, pointing at the pathetic Bundle of schmatties on Ilsa's machine. "TROW IT OUT DA TENT FLOOR VEENDOW!"

For years after that, my hubby and I repeated that line whenever we wanted to stop worrying about something. "TROW IT OUT DA TENT FLOOR VEENDOW!" was our private way of saying, "Don't worry. I got this."

When Jesus called himself The True Vine, and us "The Branches", He tells us we are all connected through Him. Ilsa was in danger of being "cut off" because she was unproductive. The Big Boss was well within his rights to fire her. Those of us who believe in the Free Market System are not kindly disposed to keeping employees in the workplace who don't contribute anything. Yet, Ilsa's coworkers loved her and didn't want her fired. Her family depended on her. Maybe with the help of her coworkers, she could learn how to stitch and become a better employee, but for the time being, the community of ladies bore her burden and carried her along.

Incidentally, there was another patient in the Nursing Home named "Elsie". Elsie was a bit younger than Bessie, and followed her everywhere. They were good friends, but I could see that Elsie practically worshiped the ground Bessie walked on. I wonder if she was the "Ilsa" of the long-ago sweatshop factory in the West End.

The three years of drought were nearing an end, and Elijah, who had been in hiding, strode back to King Ahab for the Showdown. Would the King repent and finally release the rain? Elijah seemed to think he was the only one left who believed in The One True God, yet he encounters Obadiah, a Prophet, who has been hiding over 100 Believers in a cave and sustaining them with food and water the whole time.

Elijah sets up a challenge..."You priests of Baal set up your altar, and I'll set up mine...and we'll see which one gets fire from heaven to consume the sacrifice. No Cheating!"

The priests of Baal go first. They set up the altar, making sure there are plenty of sticks and other flammable materials around to help Baal out. Then they do their prayers...and nothing happens. Then they start doing some ritual dancing. Still nothing. Then they start cutting themselves and each other, hoping their bloody screams will attract their god.

Elijah starts mocking them. "Scream louder," he mocks. "Maybe Baal is asleep, or relieving himself!" Still nothing. Then it's Elijah's turn.

Elijah makes sure that his altar is LESS flammable than Baal's. He soaks the sacrifice, the altar and the wood with water. Then he directs people to did a trench around the altar and fill that with water too. The One True God isn't deterred by the water, and flames leap from the sky and consume the sacrifice.

One would hope that this would have been enough to change the king's heart, but it didn't. It did, however, discredit Baal and his priests, who end up getting executed.

After this miraculous victory, Elijah flees again and ends up sulking in the desert. He thinks that he is the ONLY BELIEVER LEFT ON THE PLANET.

God has to remind him that there was always a remnant, whether they were embedded in the king's court like Obadiah, or waiting in a cave for the right moment. The demonstration at the altars probably converted hundreds of people, even if Ahab remained unmoved. The miracle was a signal for the drought to end.

God used this incident to show us that we are NEVER alone, even when we feel that way. Truth doesn't depend on our transient feelings. Like the ladies in the West End Garment Factory, God is always there, sometimes working in secret. So, Elijah, take those sulky, moody, self-pitying, thoughts and "TROW IT OUT DA TENT FLOOR VEENDOW!"

God's Got This.

Psalm 84

To the leader: according to The Gittith. Of the Korahites. A Psalm.

1 How lovely is your dwelling place,
O Lord of hosts!
2 My soul longs, indeed it faints
for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh sing for joy
to the living God.

3 Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O Lord of hosts,
my King and my God.
4 Happy are those who live in your house,
ever singing your praise.
Selah

5 Happy are those whose strength is in you,
in whose heart are the highways to Zion.*
6 As they go through the valley of Baca
they make it a place of springs;
the early rain also covers it with pools.
7 They go from strength to strength;
the God of gods will be seen in Zion.

8 O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer;
give ear, O God of Jacob!
Selah
9 Behold our shield, O God;
look on the face of your anointed.

10 For a day in your courts is better
than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than live in the tents of wickedness.
11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
he bestows favour and honour.
No good thing does the Lord withhold
from those who walk uprightly.
12 O Lord of hosts,
happy is everyone who trusts in you.
