[Catholic Caucus] The "Mercy" Hammer Comes Down on Traditional Latin Masses in Detroit -- 10 Parish Masses to be Closed [Update: Ad Orientem posture in Novus Ordo also banned]

[Catholic Caucus] The "Mercy" Hammer Comes Down on Traditional Latin Masses in Detroit -- 10 Parish Masses to be Closed [Update: Ad Orientem posture in Novus Ordo also banned]

[Updated: as the full implementation document at the end makes clear, the ban of ad orientem and other traditional liturgical aspects in the Novus Ordo is not a rumor anymore, but it's fully public.]

Ugliness and cruelty dressed up as goodness and obedience. Disgusting.

A few notes:

1. "Fidelity to the Holy Father's call" - He means Francis; Leo XIV has made no such call yet.

2. The "all other sites" for which permission will end (June 30, 2025) include at least 10 parishes which offer the TLM every Sunday, and often on weekdays.

3. The somewhat soft/passive-aggressive language is repulsive, because it hides the truth: this decision is devastating for the archdiocese that has likely the most TLMs in North America. It also probably indicates as true the rumor of a further document in July banning ad orientem in the Novus Ordo (used at several locations throughout the diocese) [Update: Not a rumor anymore - see end of post]. Detroit was a massive and very public sign of all the good Summorum Pontificum accomplished -- Weisenburger was sent there by Francis to put an end to that. [Update: sorry, it isn't a rumor

4. To be truly pastoral, it seems the new archbishop (installed just this past March) could have followed the example of the nearby Diocese of Saginaw and written the Holy See for an extension (allowing the TLM to continue in the meantime). He did no such thing. Because he obviously enjoys being a cruel anti-liturgical enforcer. Remember: for them, the cruelty is the method.

Letter from Archbishop Weisenburger regarding the celebration of the traditional Latin Mass in the Archdiocese of Detroit

June 13, 2025

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

You will recall that in 2021, Pope Francis issued guidelines for the celebration of the Mass in the extraordinary form, commonly called the "Traditional Latin Mass." This is the expression of the Mass which was offered prior to Vatican II. Over the past four years, Archbishop Vigneron issued norms for the Archdiocese of Detroit in this regard. He communicated to the priests that while an extension of permission for parish churches was allowed temporarily, plans should be developed for these communities to come into union with the new liturgical teachings and law of the Church.

As there are a number of the faithful in our local Church who have found spiritual richness in this form of the Mass, I am permitting it to continue in accord with the Holy See's parameters. Toward that end there are two goods which must come together as we move forward: the pastoral care of these faithful as well as fidelity to the Holy Father's call for the Ordinary form of the Mass to become the "unique expression of the lex orandi of the Roman Rite" (Traditionis Custodes, Art. 1). Guided by these principles, beginning July 1, 2025, the Traditional Latin Mass will be offered at St. Joseph Shrine in Detroit in the Central Region and three non-parish churches in each additional region of the Archdiocese of Detroit. These sites are as follows:

Central Region - St. Joseph Shrine in Detroit

South Region - St. Irene Church in Dundee

Northwest Region - Our Lady of Orchard Lake Chapel in Orchard Lake

Northeast Region - St. Joseph Church in Port Huron

Permission for this celebration at all other sites will expire on June 30, 2025. While not every priest will retain the required permission to celebrate the Mass according to the rubrics of the 1962 missal, a number of priests will be available to serve these four regional sites. I take seriously my charge to care for all the faithful and am confident that this new arrangement is faithful to the Church's law while expressing my concern for your spiritual welfare.

I have been impressed by the rich expressions of the Catholic faith in southeast Michigan. The unity of our Catholic faith need not be diminished by diversity. Likewise, fidelity to Christ is only possible if we remain faithful to the Church, under the leadership of our Pope and the local bishop. I am grateful for your cooperation in implementing this new direction which aligns us with the instruction from the Holy See, and equally grateful for your prayers for me and for all our priests.

Entrusting you to the maternal care of the Blessed Virgin Mary and our patroness, St. Anne, I remain,

Sincerely yours in Christ Jesus,

Most Reverend Edward J. Weisenburger

Archbishop of Detroit

Update (4pm CDT): The ban of traditional aspects on the Novus Ordo is dated from yesterday and included in the anti-Latin Mass guidelines. The full document is the "Traditionis Custodes Implementation Norms", dated June 12, 2025 -- the quote banning ad orientem posture in the Novus Ordo is below.

[New update (6 pm CDT): the Archdiocese has apparently protected the file in the link after we updated this post, but it's available for download here now if you can't access it through the link above.]

I know of some traditional Catholics who will be extremely unhappy. They love the Latin mass. (Not me)

Yet another bishop demonstrates that he doesn't know how to translate the Latin of GIRM 299.

Nor does he pay attention to the standing instructions from Rome, which are that ad orientem is a licit option in the NO mass, and bishops don't have the authority to prohibit licit options in the mass.

Much like leftists Federal District Judges, leftist Bishops enjoy unlimited power in all things. They’re practically gods.

Ask them; they’ll tell you all about it.

Wish I had known this earlier so I could have taken my daughter to a Latin mass in Port Huron.

One of my Army Buddies mentioned that he missed the Latin masses because no matter where in the world you went to mass, you knew what was happening.

One could attempt to continue celebrating ad orientem arguing that in doing so, one is faithfully observing the Canon cited in point I, which trumps point H: forbidding Ad Orientem is an addition to the rubrics by the Archbishop.

If one makes such an attempt, one needs to be prepared to pay the piper if so required—unjust as that may seem.

Then they sanctimoniously reject clericalism, although they themselves are the biggest practitioners of it.
