Can we see the face of the invisible God? Do we know what our Savior looked like? The film The Face of Jesus explores two acheiropoietic images—sacred cloths not made by human hands—the Shroud of Turin and the Veil of Manoppello, as well as the most extraordinary depiction of Jesus painted by human hands: the Vilnius image of the Merciful Jesus. Filmmakers take the audience on a cinematic journey to the tomb in Jerusalem from 2,000 years ago, to Rome, Manoppello, and San Giovanni Rotondo, to discover what our Savior looked like. After the main feature, learn about the devotion to the Holy Face with a bonus featuring U.S. clergy who detail the power of the ancient devotion and why it’s gaining traction among the faithful in modern times.

O Face, Divine of Jesus,
in ages long ago,
Prophets and Sages prayed that Thou,
on earth its light would show.
O Holy Face, I cry to Thee,
Like them that I Thy beams may see,
O Holy Face I cry to Thee.
O suff’ring Face of Jesus,
bleeding, soiled and torn,
Thy temples and Thy brow transpierced with
many a cruel thorn.
Most Holy Face, I cry to Thee,
offer Thy wounds to God for me,
Most Holy Face I cry to Thee.
O dying Face of Jesus, on
that redeeming tree,
Crying aloud, “ah! why My God, hast
Thou abandoned Me?”
Most Holy Face, I cry to Thee,
plead by Thine agony for me,
Most Holy Face I cry to Thee.
O Glorious Face of Jesus, if
after I have died,
My soul but in Thy likeness make,
I shall be satisfied.
Most Holy Face, I cry to thee,
more like Thee ever make Thou me,
Most Holy Face I cry to Thee.
WHERE??
why does a Christian need to know what he looked like?
Why does God demand no graven images?
I don’t know if this shroud is Satan’s workmanship or not. I do know Jesus had short hair.
“Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him?” – 1 Corinthians 11:14
If he had long hair, he would stick out like a sore thumb. That wouldn’t make him unremarkable.
Can we see the face of the invisible God? Do we know what our Savior looked like? …No to both.
Yes; therefore He did not have long hair.
Well, in the South, most Protestant churches had Jesus Fans. There was a picture of Jesus on one side, and an ad for a local funeral home on the other.
I remember one at my grandmother’s Baptist church showed a wimpy looking Jesus with a blonde flip hairdo. I was just a child and did not know there was such a thing as gay then, but if I had ...
Air conditioning put an end to Jesus Fans. Now they are collector’s items selling for hundreds of dollars each.
I never met the Man so I don’t know what he looked like when He was on Earth. Did read a good bit about Him though.
Exodus 33:
18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
21 And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
John 10:30:
I and the father are one.
Why did the Word become flesh and dwell among us?
The ancient pagans ... and the ancient Hebrews ... had never seen God. Any imagining they might have done would necessarily have been wrong.
And then God took on human nature, conceived by the Holy Ghost and born of the virgin Mary: a Man like us in all things but sin.
A particular man, in a particular time and a particular place. The Word Made Flesh had a real appearance ... I think some people are just uncomfortable with the incarnation. It’s sad, really, to be uncomfortable with the greatest gift God has given us.
Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yes, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more2 Corinthians 5:16.
How does one know Christ? What did Christ himself do to make himself known after his resurrection?
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.Luke 24:27
However, many today are being saved by visions and dreams of Jesus as prophesied,
And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreamsActs 2:17.
What then? Notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.Philippians 1:18.
I agree with that. Let's rejoice that the name of Jesus is lifted up that some might be saved.
Some scholars think Jesus was a Nazarite. They had long hair.
Thanks. I would not have known about it. Got my ticket.
Iconoclasts blur these distinctions between the several gradations of piety (latria, dulia & hyperdulia), despite Adonai’s command to hear Him from between the images of angels on the ark of the covenant (Exodus 25:22), and Adonai’s command (Numbers 21:6-9) to set up brass serpents on a pole to be viewed by the people for a cure from the plague punishment for their faithlessness, to which Jesus seems to be referring about Himself in John 12:32 when He says “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself.”.
Christianity is a spritual-physical religion, “a big pint, a thick steak & a big cigar” (G.K Chesterton).
Yes! BTW, I’ve been a Chesterton fan ever since I discovered him in my early teens. He’s worn quite well, too!
