Water, Rivers, and Streams in the Bible
Exodus 15:22-27

The Waters of Marah and Elim

22 Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water. 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.[f]) 24 So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”

25 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink.

There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test. 26 He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.”

27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water.

This Story keeps showing up on this Thread. When we looked at "Trees in the Bible" this was a key story. Then it popped up again when we did the Series on the Names of God (Yehovah Rapha-The God Who Heals You). Now, here we are again, as we look at Water in the Bible. There are so many layers to this Story.

In a very silly movie that is becoming a "cult favorite", a world is imagined that has degenerated into idiocy. The hapless people are facing starvation because the crops won't grow. A "Time Traveler" discovers that the Powers-That-Be have been watering all the crops with a Sports Drink full of salt and "electrolytes". When the Time Traveler suggests using plain water on the crops, they think he's crazy, but, they are desperate, so they try his suggestion. Famine is averted and the Time Traveler, who is of average intelligence, is considered the Smartest Man On Earth.

By some calculations, Moses was leading over 800,000 people across the desert. Some say it was more than a million. If you look at old pictures of Woodstock, that would be about the same. Coordinating Food, Water, and Sanitation for that many people is a nearly impossible task, especially for just one person. And yet, here was Moses, appointed by God to do this monumental task.

After the incredible Joy and Victory at the Red Sea, the people should have realized that The God of the Universe was on their side. Yet, it wasn't long before they started complaining again. It's about Water this time. But...there appears to be a pond up ahead, and they rush to it, only to find that the waters are bitter.

On instructions from God, Moses throws a large tree branch into the water, and the water is miraculously made sweet. Christian Scholars interpret this as a foreshadowing of The Cross of Jesus. I also believe that, but do not ascribe any "magical power" to the tree itself. The healing of the water comes from God.

Throwing a tree branch into bitter water like the Dead Sea will NOT heal the water, so this is a Miracle. God makes it clear that it's not the branch, but He Himself Who does the healing. We aren't to make idols or talismans of wood to sweeten the bitter waters, but to look to Yehovah Rapha, The God Who Heals.
