Pope Leo XIV affirms family is based on union between a man and a woman, unborn has inherent dignity

Pope Leo XIV affirmed Friday that the family is founded on the “stable union between a man and a woman,” and that the unborn and elderly enjoy dignity as God’s creatures, articulating clear Catholic teaching on marriage and abortion at the start of his pontificate.

...Leo, a member of the Augustinian religious order, has emphasized peace as a priority of his pontificate, from the first words he uttered on the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica after his election, “Peace be with you all.”

In his remarks, he said the search for peace was one of the pillars of the papacy. He insisted that peace isn’t just the absence of conflict but a “gift” that requires work, from an end to the production of weapons to choosing words carefully. “For words too, not only weapons, can wound and even kill.”

He said it was up to governments to build peaceful societies “above all by investing in the family, founded upon the stable union between a man and a woman.”

“In addition, no one is exempted from striving to ensure respect for the dignity of every person, especially the most frail and vulnerable, from the unborn to the elderly, from the sick to the unemployed, citizens and immigrants alike,” he said.

Pope Francis strongly reaffirmed core Catholic teaching opposing abortion and euthanasia, saying they were evidence of today’s “throwaway culture.” But he also made reaching out to LGBTQ Catholics a hallmark, insisting they are welcome in the church. He never changed church doctrine defining marriage as a union between man and woman and homosexual acts as “intrinsically disordered.”

As the then-head of the Augustinian order, the Rev. Robert Prevost in 2012 criticized the “homosexual lifestyle” and the role of mass media in promoting acceptance of same-sex relationships that conflicted with Catholic doctrine.

Well this certainly is encouraging from what we’ve been receiving from Rome.

Nice to hear.

In spite of people’s fears, and how Francis had selected the majority of cardinals who voted for his successor, Leo may well pave a different path.

So just because Francis had been in position to appoint the majority of cardinals, it didn’t necessarily mean that the next pope would be a clone of Francis..

I grew up Catholic, so I am interested, but I had low expectations.

Leftism is often a one-way ratchet, and territory lost to Leftists is rarely regained, so we shall see what happens with the Church.

This may be lip service, but that is far better than what we have seen out of the Vatican in the recent past, so...I’ll give the benefit of the doubt until I see I am wrong.

I have to admit I was cynical about his election, but have been very encouraged by the things he’s been saying coming out of the gate.

Prayers must continue to be lifted up for him and his papacy, beyond the routine petitions said during mass.

It’s interesting, isn’t it? I debated this point with folks here as well as offline. Many were convinced that because Bergoglio had appointed >80% of the conclave, they were destined to elect Francis II who would be even more of a leftist wrecking ball than Bergoglio.

Perhaps it was wishful thinking on my part, but I kept saying, “Don’t assume that. All of these cardinals from Africa, Asia, etc., aren’t western liberals. And you know even with the Eureopean and North American cardinals, just because Bergoglio appointed them don’t assume that they think he’s doing a good job.”

Just a gentle reminder to folks that God is in charge.

Frankie may have tried to stack the deck for a radical communist successor.

Some of the cardinals may have thought they were electing one.

But they’re not the ones truly calling the shots ...

So far, his only serious flaw is his support of illegal immigration, and that’s only inferred based on a couple posts criticizing Trump and Vance prior to his selection as Pope. Being based in Peru, he was embedded in a culture that is very sympathetic to migrants. Hopefully as Pope, he will temper those views, as they are a serious threat to the church in Europe. Even the Vatican itself.

Exactly. I’m not Catholic, however, there are a few things that I read about him that had me a bit concerned. I wouldn’t say he’s perfect, but overall doing a very good job so far.

When Leo excommunicates Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi, that will be news, not just reaffirmation.

Now, he did start out as a South Side kid in a bungalow, so there is hope for him. Too bad he's a White Sox fan, but nobody's perfect.
