Genesis 16

Hagar and Ishmael

16 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; 2 so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”

Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.

When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”

6 “Your slave is in your hands,” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.

7 The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. 8 And he said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”

“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.

9 Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”

11 The angel of the Lord also said to her:

“You are now pregnant
    and you will give birth to a son.
You shall name him Ishmael,[a]
    for the Lord has heard of your misery.
12  He will be a wild donkey of a man;
    his hand will be against everyone
    and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
    toward[b] all his brothers.”

13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen[c] the One who sees me.” 14 That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi[d]; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.

15 So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

Just Yesterday I bought a copy, on vinyl, of Joni Mitchel's "Ladies Of The Canyon". Normally, vinyl at this particular store is only a buck each, but it was Storewide Sale Day, and I got 20% off. Plus tax, that made it 85 cents. I was drawn to the Album because it contained several songs I used to sing, barefoot, on Boston Common, with flowers in my hair. Yeah...that was me.

My girlfriend Sally was one year older than I, and so she was in her first year of College while I was still in High School. She returned from her Freshman Year totally radicalized. She and some friends had gotten an "apartment" on Beacon Hill and I was SO jealous. I still lived at home and was under my parents' jurisdiction. I wanted to run away and join my friends in their "hippie lifestyle". It looked like total freedom to me.

Sally invited me to come visit her in her apartment. I eagerly hopped onto the trolley and went intown, crossed Boston Common (where I used to sing), and went up Joy Street on Beacon Hill. The address Sally had given me was a beautiful old Brownstone that had seen better days.

The bell was broken and the front door was open, so I went into what had been a lovely reception hall. The stairway had been boxed in with plywood, and what had been two Front Parlors had been boxed off into "apartments". Sally and her friends were on the third floor, so I schlepped up the littered staircase, as there was no elevator. The hallway and stairs didn't smell good. It was a thick combination of incense, scented candles, weed, and garbage. Oh how that lovely old house had fallen! I really hoped that this wasn't the smell of "Freedom"!

Sally welcomed me into her "apartment", which had probably been a bedroom in the old house. Several mattresses were on the floor (no box springs or bedsheets!), and were littered with trash, half-eaten pizza, potato chips, and who knows what else. I didn't feel comfortable sitting down. There was one chair, which only had a little black book on it. I moved to remove the book and sit down on a real chair.

"Don't Touch That Book!" Sally shouted. "Our Roommate Joe sells dope and he has to report his EVERY move to the mafia. That's HIS DIARY!"

Suddenly, my little bedroom at the top of the stairs, Mom and Dad, and my five younger siblings looked mighty good to me. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I never had the occasion to speak with Sally again, but now, she's still a year older than I. That would make her 73. I wonder if she's still a radical, or if she's had an epiphany. I'm glad she survived Joy Street.

I can't even imagine how "put out" Hagar must have felt. First of all, she's in a foreign country. Second of all, she's a Slave. And, then, her Mistress cons her into sleeping with the old master, and she finds herself pregnant by him. What else was there to do but run away?

But God had a Plan for Hagar and the Generations who would follow. Many Arab groups claim Ishmael as their progenitor, and therefore, Hagar as their G-G-G-Great Grandmother. AS she sits by a stream in the desert, an Angel tells Hagar to go back home. As awkward as it may be, Abraham is STILL the Father of her child, and God wants Hagar to be considered the Mother of Many Nations.

Sometimes, you have to leave, to find your way back home.
