Mt. Ennon Baptist Church is a 9000-member megachurch in Clinton, MD, that is associated with the National Baptist Convention USA and is led by senior “pastor” Delman Coates. According to their website, their vision is to be a “Caring, Christ-centered, Community Church, with a Kingdom Agenda.”
One of their core beliefs is the importance of “Biblical Preaching and Teaching” , because “The Word of God is the final authority; it is true; it is unchangeable; it is to be used to equip the saints to achieve our mission.”
At the same time, however, along with other beliefs centering around “prayer,” “worship,” and “unity,” they say that they value “innovation” and that “We believe that God’s vision is progressive and as such we believe that the ministry of the church should bed progressive, embracing Godly innovation to keep us on the cutting edge of what God is doing in the Body of Christ.”
In a recent sermon titled Don’t Die Like Weezy: Let’s Talk About Sex‘, Coates attacks the notion that the bible prohibits pre-marital sex and that Christians should not engage in it, insisting that all verses to the contrary are a mistranslation.
Instead, he argues that the scripture celebrates it and that no one should feel shame or guilt about having sex with whoever they want, so long as it is safe and consensual.
“The living Bible translation that says this, another problematic translation, ‘but sexual sin is never right.’ These translations give unlearned readers the impression that the text is saying that sex before or outside of marriage is wrong. But the Bible is not saying that. It is critiquing prostitution, the immoral and unjust sexual and economic exploitation of poor people, slaves, women and young males who are oftentimes forced into prostitution in the first century.
Have I lost you all still with me today? Every time the word ‘pornea’ translated fornication is used in the New Testament, it is talking about prostitution.
It is not talking about or condemning consensual sexual relations. I told y’all, this the first time you have ever heard this preached in a church. Therefore, teaching Christians that sex before outside of marriage is a sin, may be tradition, it may be something that’s been passed down from generation to generation, it may be something that you learned from an esteemed Bible preacher or teacher, but it is not something supported by the Word of God.
There is no biblical basis for that teaching. I know this comes as a shock to many of you. It may sound sacrilegious to others, but I am obligated as a preacher of the Word of God to preach the truth of the Bible and not to further myth, superstitions, and lies. Jesus said, ‘and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.’
So all of these Christian podcasts and Christian social media confluencers and charismatic preachers telling people that having sex before or outside of marriage based upon the word of God, they are wrong. They may be sincere, but you can be sincerely wrong. The Bible does not make celibacy a sign of your holiness. There is no biblical basis for all of these ministries spreading purity culture that abstinence.”

I was really surprised at the number of pastors they show on true crime shows who kill a girl friend or a wife while engaging in a holy love triangle. They act like Algore sex poodles.

Seems pretty straight-forward to me. If you can abstain, great. If you can't keep your pants on, marry. Paul didn't say that pre-marital sex is great as long as no money changes hands.
Note that verse 1 indicates that the Christians in Corinth were already talking about sex in the manner this "pastor" says. Paul corrected them.

I once heard a preacher say that nearly all men are at risk of becoming sexual addicts—which is why God’s commandments about sex after marriage are so strict.
He also said many marriages end in divorce because they began with sex as the foundation—implying that men, driven by desire, often confuse lust for love and end up marrying for the wrong reasons.
