On The Physical Death of Jesus Christ
The New England Journal of Medicine ^ | March 21, 1986 | William D. Edwards, MD; Wesley J. Gabel, MDiv; Floyd E. Hosmer, MS, AMI

ABSTRACT: Jesus of Nazareth underwent Jewish and Roman trials, was flogged, and was sentenced to death by crucifixion. The scourging produced deep stripelike lacerations and appreciable blood loss, and it probably set the stage for hypovolemic shock as evidenced by the fact that Jesus was too weakened to carry the crossbar (patibulum) to Golgotha. At the site of crucifixion his wrists were nailed to the patibulum, and after the patibulum was lifted onto the upright post, (stipes) his feet were nailed to the stipes. The major pathophysiologic effect of crucifixion was an interference with normal respirations. Accordingly, death resulted primarily from hypovolemic shock and exhaustion asphyxia. Jesus’ death was ensured by the thrust of a soldier’s spear into his side. Modern medical interpretation of the historical evidence indicates that Jesus was dead when taken down from the cross. I visited the Shroud of Turin museum about six weeks ago.

Jesus was about six feet tall.

They’ve analyzed the pollens on the Shroud.

The physical death was awful. But I think our Lord dreaded more the idea of being seperated from his father because he became sin.

I imagine it was in the Garden of Gethsemane where he was really crushed by the idea of being separated from him whom he had been with for eternity before. The weight of sin crushed him.

The gospel really begins in the garden. As he fell to the ground with nobody to help him or comfort him.

My favorite Bible commentator, she said the son had to face the frown of the Father. Wow....what a statement. he became sin for us. So we could be righteous in him.

I’ve done my fair share of research on the Shroud. Swordmaker stands alone in this regard.

The more research I do, the depths of the pain Jesus felt grows. I also feel like a bigger wretch.

But it’s better than ignorance. And yes that’s Jesus’ Image in the Shroud.

Thank you for this comment.

Many have difficulty even beginning to think about one person being both fully human, and fully divine.

Yet here he was, and dwelt among us.

What you said was really so insightful and timely.

Our human minds cannot comprehend His abilities, His strength or His willingness to be sacrificed for us. Everything we write, say and do are only our best guesses after reading Holy passages and trying to make sense of them.

Another informed view, by a physician/engineer. The author is both a physician and an engineer, so he considers both aspects.

“The gospel really begins in the garden.”

The five sorrowful mysteries of the Catholic rosary begin with meditation on Christ’s Agony in the Garden.

Then, Scourging at the Pillar, Crowning with Thorns, Carrying of the Cross, and Crucifixion.

But yes, the uniquely human agony He suffered in the Garden appears certainly to have exceeded, by far, anything He had experienced during His prior thirty-three years of incarnate life.

By the way, just today, This Guy was checking out materials (written by an inherently trustworthy Catholic visionary) suggesting that Christ’s Passion, Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension occurred, not in ARSH 33 as many Catholics typically think is true, but instead, in ARSH 34. This makes sense, if in fact Christ was born in December of what would later have been recognized as ARSH 1, and is (as is traditional) to be considered to have been in His thirty-third year of life when, in innocent reparation for our sins, He suffered and died, only miraculously to rise again.

The year before ARSH 1 logically (and, FWIW, mathematically soundly, based for example on a simple number line representation of that momentous period) being 1 “BC” (there never having ever been a year zero!).

He was one of approximately 100,000 Jews who were executed this way by the Roman’s during their occupation of Israel.

The physical death was awful.

One interesting fact about Jesus's death is that according to three of the gospels, Jesus was only crucified for six hours (9 am to 3 pm). Most crucifixions in the Roman Empire lasted for a few days until the convict finally died.

Amen. In the garden he trod the winepress alone. For there was none with him. Amen.

“...this way...”

The scourging He experienced prior to crucifixion was seemingly uniquely horrendous. For example: Medically speaking.

These was no mere punitive lashing, but itself an excruciating and methodical bringing to near-death.

The crowning with thorns was also perfectly unique.

True, but he was the only one ridiculed and mocked as the King of the Jews with a crown of thorns. And most importantly, he was the only one that resurrected.

I believe this was prophecied too. They asked the Roman Soldiers to break the bones of the men beside him so death would come and they wouldn’t be up there during the Sabbath hours. But when they came to Jesus, they didn’t need to break his bones......for he was already dead. John 19: 31 to 33.

And the prophecy.....amazing! It was him all along! The Messiah. The Lamb of God!

Quote:

“They shall leave none of it until morning, nor break one of its bones. According to all the ordinances of the Passover they shall keep it.” ~Numbers 9:12

To put it another way, physical death (separation of the soul from the body) is nothing compared to spiritual death (separation from God).
And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. (MT 10:28).
