Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent,
How Mighty,
and How Wonderful is Your Holy Name!
And How True and Marvelous is Your Word.
Your Promises and Your Covenants are Forever,

Let all that has been Concealed

Despite the daily threat of slipping and falling on the ice, we had a relatively easy winter this year. There were only two really bad accumulations of snow, but much more icing than usual. The snow would melt, wash away the salt, coat everything with melt water, and then freeze over at night. Until the trucks came by with more salt, it was like a sheet of glass out there. One day it was so bad that I had to cancel all my lessons, because it took all day to carefully extract my car from a sarcophagus of ice. I thought of the ground water being contaminated by all that salt, and despaired of my garden even surviving without its protective blanket of snow. It seemed like an episode of "Game of Thrones", entitled "The Land of Ice and Salt".

The month of March was just weird, with balmy days in the 60's contrasting with bare trees and brittle grass. It wasn't Spring yet...but it felt like Late Autumn, after the leaves have fallen, and you get one last gasp of Summer.

Then I saw my First Robin of the Year! Woo Hoo! Then...a Crocus! Then, the April Showers began. They haven't stopped since. I want so much to get my Motorcycle and start riding, but every day it has been miserable. Yesterday, I even saw some snow flurries. My brother washed my bike and showed me a picture on his phone. I don't want to ride in the rain and ruin it.

Yesterday, I knew it was time to do a bit of yard work, by clearing out all the dead leaves and stalks from last year's garden. As I pulled the old, sodden, thatch from the ground, I saw hundreds of shoots of new growth from all the bulbs I had planted over the last nine years. I think my garden is going to be particularly awesome this year.

St. Paul describes The Holy Spirit as "The Quickening Spirit". That's an old-fashioned term that speaks of the Spark of Life that revives the dead. It is also the term that was used when a pregnant woman first feel the life within her. Here, Paul tells us that we were dead in our sins, but that Jesus died for us, and The Holy Spirit gives us New Life.

That's even more miraculous than Springtime in New England.
