Yesterday, I shared my Brother-In-Law's obituary, which had been written by my Sister. She is an excellent writer, and an inspiration to me. I love to tell my stories and memories, and relate them to the Day's Scripture, but Chris has a nice "turn of the phrase" in her prose that I lack. However, I'm better at song lyrics than I am at prose. Perhaps it is the meter and patterns of the music that keep me in check.

I recently read a book by Author Stephen King about writing. Although King's writing is too "dark" for my personal taste, he does have some excellent advice about the craft of writing.

One of the things I remember is his emphasis on Brevity. Shakespeare, Mark Twain, and other Luminaries of Literature all seem to have a lot to say about brevity. Sometimes they go on for many pages explaining why brevity is so important.

King also has a loathing for adverbs. We learned a lot about the parts-of-speech in English Class, and adverbs are important. They modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. However, some writers slather adverbs on like butter, and it can really become really, really annoying. 😁

So...it's time to chop those adverbs.

Last, but not least, are those Exclamation Marks. The general rule is that too many Exclamation Points, while acceptable in casual communication, are "unprofessional" in serious writing. They convey excess zeal, surprise, or excitement that may be inappropriate. The old adage is that we are allowed only so many Exclamation Points in our lifetimes, so they should be used sparingly.

The place where I use "too many" Exclamation Points is when I write out my Opening Prayer for this Thread. I look back on previous posts, and the Exclamation Points litter the prayers like flies on flypaper. There's no way I can go back and edit them, but that's OK, because it's how I felt at the time. It's hard to convey the Joy of being "in the Spirit" with a keyboard without resorting to Exclamation Points.

Flesh is Flesh, and Spirit is Spirit, and they are not the same. I will continue to use Exclamation Points, if they can, in some way, indicate the Sense of Wonder that exists while praying in the Spirit.
