Yesterday was a "Stay-Inside" kind of Winter Day: cold, damp, raw, and threatening snow. This morning Nature made good on her threats, and everything is buried in the heaviest wet snow I think I've ever experienced. After posting Today's Story, I'll be outside, shoveling.

Stuck indoors, I began "surfing the net" and came across the lurid headline:

"TOUR THE WORST, POOREST SECTIONS OF BOSTON".

I imagined a Dystopian expose' of the miserable stretch of road at the junction of Massachusetts Ave and Melnia Cass Blvd (Mass and Cass), a microcosm of LA also known as "The Methadone Mile".

"Good!" I mused. "This awful stain on my beloved city SHOULD be exposed to the world. Maybe we'll get it cleaned up. (Are you with me, Mayor Wu?)"

The Corner of Mass and Cass didn't even make the video. Instead this obviously ignorant videographer drove his car around MY OLD NEIGHBORHOOD, Mattapan and Dorchester. And that wasn't all. He called Dorchester "Roxbury" (which only was in the very end of the video) and he called the entire area "SOUTH BOSTON"! (South Boston, or "Southie" featured in the movies "Good Will Hunting" and "The Departed" is an entirely DIFFERENT section of the City.)

The "tour" started in Mattapan Square, and proceeded up Blue Hill Avenue and finally ended up in the Roxbury Neighborhood of Grove Hall. There were few people around, as it was a workday. The streets were remarkably free of the litter, homeless encampments, burned-out cars, etc, that we associate with the worst parts of a big city. No, it was mostly small businesses and churches on the main streets, and "Three Deckers" on the side streets. It was "Trash Day" and all the residents had put out their trash and recycling in their respective bins.

I have no illusions about the area. It has had serious gang problems and there was even a movie made about the gang activity (Blue Hill Avenue). My niece is a firefighter in the area, and her station is one of the busiest in the city. But, since properties in Boston are now going for a MILLION DOLLARS for a 2-Br Condo, the Old Victorians are starting to look pretty good. Add the proximity to the City Core and Public Transportation, and you have Prime Real Estate. My only conclusion is that the Videographer either was looking at statistics from 30 years ago, or just assumed that Mattapan/Dorchester/Roxbury was the worst part of Boston because most of its population is black.

I wasn't going to sign in to leave a comment, but my contribution would have failed against the Tsunami of Negatives that crashed in on the video. Most pointed out that Mattapan/Dorchester/Roxbury were experiencing a renewal due to gentrification. People pointed out the lack of rubbish, burned out cars and buildings, or homeless on the streets. They compared his video with ones from LA, Chicago, NYC, and Detroit. Others said that the videographer should go to "Mass and Cass" if he wanted to see the worst part of the city. There were a plethora of people, who actually LIVE in the neighborhood, who saw their own homes on the Video, and were very insulted.

The most frequent complaint was:

"DORCHESTER IS NOT SOUTHIE!!!!!"

St. Peter had these kind of notions about Gentiles in general, and probably Romans in particular. His strict adherence to Jewish Law forbade, not only unclean foods, but "unclean" PEOPLE. God came to Peter, in the Person of the Holy Spirit, using the example of the bounty that God Created, to teach him not to reject whole groups of people or to exclude them from God's Grace.

The Holy Spirit uses the things we know about to teach us. He knows just what to use to make His point.
