One of my students had to take a break from lessons, as she was in intense rehearsals for her High School Production of "Guys and Dolls". I understood, and looked forward to seeing her onstage. Our Local High School has an excellent Theater Program, and the kids work very hard to put on a Professional Quality Show.

Although I had never seen "Guys and Dolls" onstage, I remember fondly the Stereo LP that Dad used to play, and the Movie with Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra. I wasn't nearly as familiar with "Guys and Dolls" as I was with other Musicals like "My Fair Lady" or "Camelot".

I mentioned the 'Adult Theme" of the plot, and my student blushed a little. (An underworld character makes a bet that he can seduce an Urban Missionary). To those of us who support Missions, especially in the Inner City, this has a HUGE "Cringe Factor". There is also the element where the denizens of the streets pretend to be repenting of their sins, in order to use the Mission as a secret gambling den. This is all set to happen while the "hero" is off in Havana supposedly seducing the Missionary.

And yet, it's a terrific musical, very entertaining, and considered one of Broadway's Best.

Broadway has always addressed Adult Themes. "South Pacific", and "Show Boat" address Racism. "The Sound of Music" comes complete with Nazis in Uniform. A great amount of the Cast in "The King And I" are concubines or slaves. And let's not forget "West Side Story", about gang warfare, or "Hamilton", which depicts our Founding Fathers as "Aspiring Rappers". 😗

Training Vocalists for "The Big Time" has been my job for nearly a quarter century. Broadway Vocal Technique is different from Classical. Even so, a perusal of the plots of 19th Century Opera also show the seamier side of life. Perhaps because they are all in a language other than English, people are less likely to notice. Check out the plot of "Carmen" if you don't believe me.

All this boils down to the fact that we, as Christians, live and work in a world that is not really our Home. We are surrounded by a spiritual realm that, in many cases, seeks to destroy us.

Like the "guys and dolls" of the musical, these spirits simulate repentance, prophecy, charismatic gifts, and other counterfeits that can easily deceive and seduce us.

It was no different in the First century, when John the Apostle wrote his letters. He speaks of "seducing spirits" and "the spirit of antichrist".

He also shows us how to tell the difference.

The spirit of antichrist can't sincerely say "Jesus Is LORD", and MEAN IT.
