It's time for a new computer. This morning, it took nearly a half hour to boot up. After posting the Thread today, I will unplug everything, let it sit, and then boot up again. That might help a little bit. I've been hesitant to get a new computer for a number of reasons: 1. The Expense, and 2. I will be offline for a week while everything gets transferred over. Grrrrr. You KNOW how much I would hate THAT!

If my husband were still alive, he would have it done in an afternoon, and there would be no interruption in our mornings together. But, for fourteen years I've had to rely on the dreaded "Tech Support" and all that entails.

This morning, as I attempted to boot up, I tried different sequences of buttons and switches, hoping that one sequence would do the job. This is a habit I developed doing Sound. An example would be:

NEVER unplug your Bass Guitar while the Amp is still ON.

Also, NEVER put your microphone in front of your PA Speaker. YIKES! Context and sequence makes a HUGE Difference.

After trying several sequences, the Bluetooth finally connected and I could Boot up. And Here I Am. However, I FORGOT which Sequence was the one that did the trick. Grrrrr.

Anyway, let's look at Today's Scripture Passage about The Holy Spirit. The first line, which is often quoted, especially by People in Authority, can cause some concern:

"If ye love Me, keep my commandments."

That's a tall order! The Commandments of God, even if meticulously obeyed, can lead to Pride and Self-Righteousness. The Pharisees kept the Law right down to the Letter, and then made up New Laws to insure that the Laws of God weren't violated. They had special strainers installed on their drinking cups to insure that they wouldn't swallow tiny bugs that might be in their drink. This wasn't for health reasons...it was because insects were considered "unclean". There were countless other rules and regulations to insure that The law wasn't violated. But, for every law, whether from God or from Man, there were ways of dodging. Jesus was quick to point these "dodges" out.

One of the most serious was the "dodge" about Honoring One's Parents. Some people were neglecting their parents, and, when called out over it, used the excuse that they were giving their money to the temple instead. (I gave at the office!). While they may have been off the hook as far as the Letter of the Law, they were violating the Spirit of the Law.

In isolation, Jesus's words about God's Commandments are scary. If we mess up, even a little bit, does that mean we don't LOVE Him?

Like every other verse in The Holy Bible, this one has context. Jesus is speaking with His Disciples, during that last Passover Seder He will celebrate with them on Earth. Christians call this "The Last Supper", and immediately, Da Vinci's Painting flashes before our eyes. A Seder could last over four hours, with Readings, Prayers, Songs, Conversations, and, of course, Eating. John's Gospel gives us more details about this night, including Jesus washing His Disciples' feet (John 13), Jesus's very Personal Prayer to His Father (John 17), and His Promise of The Holy Spirit (John 14). He also gives us the parable of the Vine and the Branches (John 15), and He assures the Disciples that, although He is leaving them, they will NOT be alone.

Let's see what Jesus has to say right after He says: "If ye love Me, keep my commandments".

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

Keeping All the Commandments under our own power is impossible. Thus, we have to invent "sequences", "dodges", and new regulations to keep us on the Straight and Narrow. But that's not the kind of obedience God wants from us.

If we are motivated by Love, we WANT to Please God. But, How do you please Someone Who is already Perfect?

Jesus knows our weakness, and provides The Comforter, The Holy Spirit, to guide us in all Truth. It is he Who gives us the Power to resist temptation, and the desire to keep The Law of God.

No sequences or dodges required.
