Dearest Friends, I am struggling with a nasty cold this morning and can barely focus on the computer (Prayers Needed!). So I hope you don't mind if I share a story from 2018:

The Electric Bass Guitar is a fairly recent addition to the long history of musical instruments. In order to get the volume needed for really low notes, the non-amplified acoustic had to have a huge sound-box. Thus we have The enormous guitar that plays the bass part in Mariachi bands, the almost comical bass-balalaika in Russian ensembles, and, of course, the huge Double Bass (also called the "Bull-Fiddle) that graces Classical Orchestras, Country, Bluegrass, Jazz, and Early Rock'n'Roll. Not only are these Behemoths unwieldy and fragile, so much that one will not fit in a normal-sized car, but they are so expensive that a single replacement string can cost over $100. It takes a very dedicated musician to play one of these, as I found out many years ago as I was walking down Huntington Av in Boston, home to Symphony Hall, The New England Conservatory, and Northeastern.

A young student schlepping a Bull Fiddle came up and asked me, "Do you know how to get to Symphony Hall?"

At first I was going to give the classic Henny Youngman response, "PRACTICE!", but looking at the size of what he was carrying and imagining it being smashed over my head, I replied, "You're almost there. It's on the next block, this side."

In the 1950's, Leo Fender came up with an alternative. It was called The Fender Precision Bass Guitar and, though still larger than an electric guitar, was played the same way. The bass LINES, however, weren't much different than the ones played on the upright bull-fiddle. It took pioneers such as James Jameson (in the MOTOWN crew) to make the bass lines a signature of the song. When that bass-line starts, you know what song is going to ensue.

Because the Electric Bass is still considered a "new" instrument in the general history, bass players are the object of many jokes. The Bass Player in "This Is Spinal Tap" gets trapped in a huge plastic pod onstage and needs to be rescued with a blowtorch, for example. The classic response to the statement "I play bass" is "What's your REAL job?" etc.

When I started playing bass in 2004, I noticed that EVERY bass player I knew had been to CULINARY SCHOOL. This was so that he would have something "to fall back on" in case he failed as a bass player. Not only have I not gone to CULINARY SCHOOL, but MY favorite thing to make for dinner is RESERVATIONS. I am in a lot of trouble. (PFTPOJ 10/21/18)

Although I have been playing Piano and Guitar for over a half-century, I have only been seriously playing Bass Guitar since 2013, when I led worship at Biker Church. Not only was I the Bass Player, but I wrote the hymns, conducted the band, and led the singing. It was a "tough gig" but I loved it. Playing Bass contains a LOT of melody, and the notes are sometimes contrapuntal to the singing line. That's why most Bass Players don't sing much (Except for such Giants as Paul McCartney and Sting), because your brain has to do two things at the same time. Since my only "formal" musical education has been Voice, I am very invested in singing. Was my new adopted instrument going to confine me to the back of the stage, a humble member of the Rhythm Section, laying down the groove for the big Superstar at the front of the band? I was in a quandary. I LOVED to sing, but the Bass Guitar was rapidly becoming my Favorite Instrument.

For Christmas 2024, I bought myself a new Bass Guitar. My old Bass, from Florida, hates the Winter, and every year, the neck gets out of plumb from the cold weather. It also takes a nine-volt battery which can run out in the middle of a gig (not good). I went to a Used Instrument Store, hoping that I could find a nice bass that didn't take a battery, was indifferent to a New England Winter, and I could afford. There was a wall full of used basses, and some of them were pretty beat up.

I sat down, plugged in the first one, tuned it up, and played a scale. Then I did the same thing with the next one. All were unsatisfactory in one way or another: too heavy, too expensive, too hard to play, etc.

Finally I found one that was just right. I couldn't understand why anyone would have traded in this little gem. It didn't have a super-famous name (It's an Ibanez), nor did it's profile match the Fenders and Gibsons and other iconic models hanging on the wall, but it was a perfect match.

When the Holy Spirit brings us to Faith, we become Adopted into The Body of Christ. We are given the right to call The Creator of The Universe "Abba Father". We love Him because He First Loved Us. He Chose Us From The Foundation Of The World, and We are His Workmanship, Saved by Grace Through Faith.
