I worked in a Christian Book Store and a Seminary for two whole years, and had never read "The Pilgrim's Progress". We had a lot of books that probably traced their lineage back to the 1678 Allegory, but not that one. I realize now that this was a big deficit on the part of the Bookstore. Maybe it wasn't the Bookstore's fault at all. Maybe it was mine. I just didn't like books that I was supposed to read! In rebellion, I read lots of Books that weren't on the "Reading List", such as "Moby Dick", "The Bothers Karamazov", and, "The Lord of the Rings". It wasn't for lack of reading comprehension that I avoided certain books. It was just that I had a rebellious streak.

Once, when my sister was visiting me in Florida, we went to a Museum of the Bible that was located on the grounds of the now defunct "Holy Land Experience" Theme Park. The park itself was not that great but the Museum (called "The Scriptorium") was marvelous. There were some very valuable examples of early hand written manuscripts, and some very early printed Bibles from the time of the invention of The Printing Press. There was a whole room about "The Pilgrim's Progress", with a diorama of John Bunyan writing the book IN PRISON. THAT really appealed to my rebellious nature! I HAD to read that book! I found a copy in the thrift store and devoured it in one sitting. I realized that the entire structure of the book, that of The Quest, is the very foundation of some of my other favorites, " Moby Dick" and "The Hobbit".

Although both Melville and Tolkien may argue that they just meant to write an "adventure story" with no allegory intended, the general feeling among readers is that characters and events in both stories are allegorical.

This same theory ran through literary circles with the publication of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" written in 1900 by L. Frank Baum. Although it is not as evident in the 1939 Movie, "The Wizard of Oz" appears to be about the Political and Economic situation of the 1890's. The Ruby Slippers were originally Silver to illustrate Money, The Yellow Brick Road was the Gold Standard, The Scarecrow was the American Farmer, The Tin-Man were the Industrial Workers, and so on. The Emerald City was only GREEN because the citizens were forced to wear green glasses, thus illustrating the deceptive nature of Paper Money.

Dorothy is "Everyman", and, like Ahab, Frodo, and Pilgrim, sets off on a Quest through a Symbolic Landscape. Like Ahab, Frodo, and Pilgrim, she encounters Characters, Situations, and Events along the way.

One character that appears in The Wizard of Oz is that of the "Good Witch". The Wicked Witch is her sister, and has been "rehabilitated" by the Musical "Wicked", and subsequent movie. The whole intent of L. Frank Baum's story somehow got lost in the shuffle.

The tragedy is that I can't even watch the 1939 movie anymore, knowing the abuses that took place in the making of that movie. From Buddy Ebsen being hospitalized (and almost DYING!) from the effects of Toxic Tin-Man Make-up, to the alleged Child Abuse and Drugging of Judy Garland, to the disrespect shown to the Munchkin Actors, it just goes on and on. One of the saddest implications is that the "Good Witch" deceives Dorothy from the very beginning. She uses Dorothy to kill her sister, when she could have sent her home right away using the Ruby Slippers. I remember chafing a little bit the first time I saw that. Her excuse is:

"You Had to Find Out For Yourself. You wouldn't have believed me if I told you."

My response to that would have been:

"WELL, YOU COULD HAVE AT LEAST TRIED!"

How many times have we hesitated to share The Gospel with somebody, because we were afraid that the person would reject us? That's not up to me to decide. Like Pilgrim, our decision to share should not be governed by our fear of rejection.

That's the Holy Spirit's job, to inspire the person to either accept or reject the Challenging Quest. Who knows, you might even get a Traveling Companion!
