Names and Titles of God the Holy Spirit
(Giver) 1 Corinthians 1-14

12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.

3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

14 For the body is not one member, but many.

Yesterday, I spoke of the many interpretations surrounding the Gifts of the Spirit. Some Religious Groups interpret them to be the ones cited by Isaiah, and others say that they are the ones cited by Paul. Some say both. There is no dispute, however, about the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit, as they are only listed once in Galatians 5. They are manifested throughout the entire Bible. We speak of "The Patience of Job", but it wasn't really Job's Patience at all. It was The Holy Spirit giving him patience. (NOBODY could have put up with those self-righteous, judgmental, lecturing, alleged, friends without the Patience of the Holy Spirit! Just My Humble Opinion.)

But, we are human, and often try to understand things in our own power, and we sometimes get things wrong. I shared this childhood memory about six years ago:

"Oh How I LOVED TV! That little 14" inch silvery square in the middle of the big mahogany cabinet dominated my life. Howdy Doody, Captain Kangaroo, Captain Bob the Artist, Roy Rodgers, Boomtown, Cartoons on Saturday Morning, Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges, and, the LOVE OF MY LIFE, "Zorro". TV was magical. I learned to draw and do animation from Boston's Captain Bob. I learned Spanish words from Zorro. I learned about The Wild West from Gunsmoke and about the Pioneers from Wagon Train. I "met" Ronald Reagan and Clint Eastwood. I even learned that laundry soap came from a place called "DEATH VALLEY". TV was magical. Mom would say:

"You watch too much TV! Go outside and get some fresh air!"

But TV was wonderful. Why go outside when I could learn so much from TV?

One day I overheard the grownups talking about my late uncle Arthur.

"Oh, poor Uncle Arthur. He died from TV. He had to stay at the special TV hospital in Mattapan...you know the one with all the porches so the TV patients could get fresh air. They thought that fresh air was the only thing that could cure TV, but he died anyway."

YIKES! NO WONDER MOM DIDN'T WANT ME TO WATCH TOO MUCH TV! IT WAS A DEADLY DISEASE!!!!!

Of course, I later found out that they were talking about TB (Tuberculosis) rather than my beloved TV. (sigh of relief) Thank God."

While the confusion wrought by "TB vs TV" was fairly harmless, confusion resulting from misinterpretation of Scripture can be a lot more serious. It may be a simple correction, such as the Elizabethan meaning of "suffer" as in "Suffer the Children to Come Unto Me." The word meant "allow" in those days, but now it has just one meaning, that of agony.

There are some people who believe with all their hearts that The King James Version is the only legitimate Translation of the Scriptures. I am not in that mindset, but I LOVE the KJV. When I started this Series on the Names of God, I chose the KJV for the series, as I wanted to be consistent throughout. However, I am getting used to the Rhythm of the Language, and it's becoming easier and more familiar every day.

I will, however, keep speaking Modern American English in my everyday conversation. Have a Great Day!
