Many years ago, I was involved in a car accident in Brockton, MA. I signaled to change lanes, and a speeding car approached me on the right and crashed into my front fender. The enraged driver verbally abused me, and screamed that he worked for an Insurance Company and was going to make sure it was listed as MY Fault. Because the damage was closer to the front of my car rather than the rear, it looked that way too. I was devastated. I had looked, signaled, and changed lanes in good faith. He had appeared out of nowhere and was speeding.

After we exchanged papers and the man drove off, I was still shaking, and hadn't gotten back into my car. An older lady approached me and handed me a piece of paper.

"I saw the whole thing," she said. "You can list me as a witness."

When I filled out the Accident report, I put the lady's name and phone number on it as a Witness. I wasn't charged with the Accident, and I believe that it was because of her telephone Testimony.

The Daniel Penny Verdict should have been a foregone conclusion. There were several witnesses who took the stand, who testified that they were in fear for their lives when Penny restrained an assailant on the Subway. Unfortunately, the chokehold that was used to restrain the man caused his death. Because of the ethnicities of the two people involved, Penny was accused of racism. It was interesting that the people who testified on Penny's behalf were a typical New York City mix of People: White, Black, Young, Old, Male and Female.

We may never know what went on in the Jury Room, but it is my humble opinion that the Testimony of these Diverse Witnesses, who could have ended up being Victims, was instrumental in freeing Daniel Penny.

Even though Daniel Penny was acquitted, the mere fact that he was indicted and brought to trial has had a chilling effect on People's reactions to violence. People are less likely to "rescue" a victim of crime, if they think that they are going to be charged with murder. Is it apathy, or genuine fear? The cynical aphorism seems to be gaining steam:

"No Good Deed Goes Unpunished."

While most of us may not be in the position of being Heroes, we often may find ourselves to be Witnesses. The Testimony of a Witness can make all the difference.

The Holy Spirit is Our Comforter, Our Advocate, Our Advisor, Our Teacher, and Our Defender. He is also a Witness to Our Redemption in Christ. He has written the Law of God on Our hearts, and has Signed it with His Seal. He testifies on Our Behalf.

We Have The Spirit of God on our side.
