Our Father In Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!

I was all packed and ready for my very first long-distance Motorcycle Ride. It was approximately 600 miles from Boston to Washington DC, and I had been told that it would take about ten hours of steady riding to get there. Mike and I decided to leave Boston on Friday after work, ride for about five hours, spend the night at a motel, and continue the next morning to DC. That would get us time to attend the Yellow Ribbon Run, the Pig Roast at the Harley Dealership, and, on Sunday Morning, the Pentagon Parking Lot to get in place for the Rolling Thunder Run To The Wall. This was an annual event that honored the Vietnam Vets and raised awareness about the POW/MIA's who were still unaccounted for. As we sat ready to leave, one older Vietnam Vet pointed to our Regulation, DOT-Approved Motorcycle Helmets.

"You can't wear those in New York State!" he shouted. "You'll get pulled over and they might even confiscate yer BIKE!"

Luckily, the Dealership was still open, and we purchased two new helmets that came down over our ears and had a face shield. Then we had to buy a roll of reflective tape and attach it on four sides of the helmets to make them comply with New York State Law. Our cool looking black helmets with their smart-aleck stickers all over them got stashed in the saddlebags. We looked ridiculous, but at least we were in compliance with the New York Laws. This made us late, and it wasn't until 1:00AM that we came upon a motel. As I related to you in an earlier story, we were refused accommodations solely because we were bikers.

Although our silly helmets were in compliance with State Law, the motel was in violation of our Constitutional Rights. Some Laws make perfect sense. Others don't.

As a lifelong resident of Massachusetts, I had a great sense of History. One of the odd things about Massachusetts was that there were still laws on the books that dated back to the time when Puritans controlled Massachusetts Bay Colony. Everything was illegal it seemed: Fireworks, Tattoos, Guns, and Loud Music after a certain time. Alcoholic Beverages could not be sold anywhere but in State Licensed "Package Stores" (The Packie), and those had to be closed on Sunday. Most of these laws have changed, but there are still vestiges of them around. Here are some.

Here is the irony. These Laws often date back to Puritan Times. The Puritans were a Protestant Sect that believe in what we now call "Reformed Theology". Along with other things, Reformed Theology teaches that we are saved by Grace, not by our own good deeds. This agrees with Scripture, and I'm sure that the Puritans believed it with all their hearts.

But, (I remember musing as a child over this), if the Puritans believed that The Grace of God freed us from The Law, why did they make up a whole bunch of NEW ones? I guess when any group becomes the ones in Power, they want everybody else to think the way they do. We see this even today.

St. Paul wrote about this in several of his Letters. He tells us that we are saved by Grace through Faith, and that nobody can "get themselves saved" by racking up a pile of good deeds. We do good because we love God, not because we are trying to get Him to love us. Goodness is a Fruit of the Holy Spirit, and comes directly from Him.

In Today's Passage, we read about The Holy Spirit liberating us from the law. That doesn't mean that we become lawless. It means that, if we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we don't even WANT to go against God's Law. If my body is His Temple, I don't WANT to defile it. If sin hurts my relationship with Him, then I don't want to do those things.

That's REAL Freedom.
