‘The Chosen’ director and creator Dallas Jenkins previewed a scene from the upcoming season of his hit TV show, featuring an interaction between Judas and Jesus that is patently unbiblical and goes against the clear teaching and narrative of the scripture.
In the scene from the upcoming season 5 that was shared by Jenkins during his live Q&A on his YouTube channel, we see this interaction:
Jesus: “You have a choice to make, Judas.” Judas: “I’m listening.” Jesus: “Who you belong to. Who has your heart. I want it, and I’ve had it before. You followed me willingly. Judas: “I want to continue. There’s nothing more than I want than that.” Jesus: “Then I will pray for you.”
Yet The scriptures never teach that Jesus “once had Judas’ heart” or was in some way a believer. Instead, we read Jesus saying in John 6:3-64, 70-71,
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him.
and
Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?” He spoke of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would betray Him, being one of the twelve.
Responding to the issue on social media, one user pointed out that a couple verses later we read that Judas was the soul that Jesus never gave the father, and consequently the Father did not keep. Instead, Judas was a “son of perdition” meaning he was destined to perish. The NIV put it that he was“doomed to destruction.”
Jesus never had Judas heart because Judas never believed, something Jenkins just ignores from the biblical text.
Reason #23 to avoid....

Cut out the dramatics, you know very well who!!!!
How could Judas have been “one of the Twelve” if Jesus did not have his heart a some time? I know it is hard to accept that a Mormon is doing more to spread the Gospel than anyone, but just remember what God did with Nebuchadnezzar, Cyrus, and Darius. They all stepped up when called.
This means that there was some who did not currently believe. Does not seem to exclude the idea of those who do not currently believe from having believed at an earlier time.
“Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?”
Similarly, this means one of the twelve is currently a devil. Does not say that they always were.
Look, I am not sure the Bible makes clear whether or not Judas "believed" at one point, but even in Jesus's own parable of the seeds the word was planted in some places that received it gladly but when the hard times came things changed. And also, the versus cited here simply do not establish that Judas never believed.
I disagree. I think Judas did agree He was the Messiah. But he wanted Jesus to crush the Romans - which he knew Jesus could do. Judas couldn't give up the world/possessions/power. He loved Jesus. But thought Jesus needed nudging to claim His Throne on earth but was too modest. Judas was shocked that Jesus allowed Himself to be arrested and scourged and would face crucifixion. He betrayed his best Friend and committed suicide with grief.
Another reason why I will never recommend that show to anyone.
The very early “extra” Biblical events were somewhat minor, and pointing them out was educational. They are now building to be openly misleading people from the truth of God’s Word.
The false rainbow on the one recording camera was a heads up to what was coming.
Where is the “Like” button when you need it?
Saw one episode outtake. NEVER WENT BACK. Didn’t like it at all.
Concur.
And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. John 13:27 (Douay Rheims).
And it was night. John 13:30
Salvation for Judas was right there for him.
Stricken with remorse, Judas, even at that late date and time (after the betrayal), might (as did Peter) have repented, and sought, and obtained from Jesus himself, forgiveness and absolution.
As we know, though, he rejected Christ, thereby earning for himself eternal perdition.
At first I was critical of The Chosen, but after watching a few episodes, I’ve changed my mind. It’s not perfect, but I understand it is leading people to Christ. Again, not going to throw the baby out with the bath water.
I have seen your explanation of Judas’ behavior elsewhere. It makes sense, and I agree with it.
As for “The Chosen”, it is imperfect - as all human things are. But it is bringing people to at least consider the life and words of Christ. So it’s a huge net plus in my book.
I never thought Judas didn’t believe... and I was always confused why he would betray Jesus... except that it was foretold so therefore it must be done
Always felt disjoint in my understanding
That’s okay...
But We Grew up on;
“JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR”
and that enshrined Judas as
A Victim.

“ ? I know it is hard to accept that a Mormon is doing more to spread the Gospel than anyone, ”
Dallas Jenkins is NOT a Mormon.
Why would would you say that ?
He filmed the initial episodes on a Mormon owned complex because it was already built and fit what they were doing .
Dallas is an evangelical Christian .
