In 2020, one of my Sisters bought a beautiful Stereo System, so that she could once again play the hundreds of Vinyl LP Records that she had collected over the years. Then, my other Sister's sons pitched in and gave her a Stereo System of the same brand, as the items were MADE IN THE USA. (This was even an improvement over Stereos from forty years ago, most of which were made in Japan). Not only were these made in America, they were developed and produced in Massachusetts, in towns that we knew well. Of course, I followed suit, and, since 2020, the three of us have amassed a huge collection of LP's. (I'm beginning to understand why a lot of us switched to CD's back in the 70's).

Nevertheless, there is a lot to be said for Vinyl. It involves all of the Five Senses:

1. Sight: The 13" x 13" Format was perfect for Cover Art. A "Gatefold" or Double Album was even Better. Some of the most beautiful (and Controversial!) Cover Art came out in the 60's and 70's. My Ambition as an Art Major in High School was to work for a Record Company designing Cover Art. I even designed a beautiful gatefold "Psychedelic" Album Cover for "Symphonie Fantastique". That had been in my portfolio for years, and helped me gain entry to both Massachusetts College of Art, and The Museum School of Fine Art. It also may have helped me get a little Scholarship back then. The Art wasn't properly preserved, and is long gone. However, it does show how important LP Cover Art has been to me.

2. Hearing: There is lots of disagreement over this, but many people believe that Vinyl just sounds better. For Better or Worse, the reason that there is a difference in Sound is that Records are Analog and CD's are Digital. There is a fundamental difference in the way the music is captured and then reproduced. My early Recording devices were Analog, and used magnetic Tape. My later studio was equipped with Digital, and produced CD's. Now, even CD's are passe', and everything is up in the "Cloud". Too bad, as there is something about being able to hold the media in your hands, which brings us to the next Sense:

3. Touch: There's something about getting a new record that transcends all the other media. First, after looking at the Cover Art, you carefully slice the Shrink Wrap so as not to rip it, unless it's a Gatefold and there's more Cover art inside. Then you carefully slide the Inner Sleeve (More Art, and Sometimes Lyrics too!), and carefully slide out the record, holding it by the edges so as not to put fingerprints on the surface. Then, a quick cleaning to remove any dust from the factory, place it on the turntable, and place the needle in the groove. As you can see, Sense 3 includes a lot from Sense 1 and 2.

4 and 5. Smell and Taste: These two senses are closely related, which is why really nasty-smelling food is often spoiled and can kill you. God designed us that way, and it was a good idea. The Sense of Smell is very Powerful, and can warn you of danger, contagion, and decay.

Conversely, good aromas remind us of home, Thanksgiving Dinner, Family, Long-Lost Love, and even your First New Car. I often mused that if I could develop a Perfume that smelled like a New Car, I would have no trouble finding a boyfriend. (not that I really need one at this stage of my life, but it would be nice). Another smell that I think might be attractive to a certain segment of the population would be Hopps #9. I like the "Outdoorsy Type". (OK...Enough of that silliness!) This brings us to Vinyl, which has a distinctive aroma, which pours out of the record the first time you open it. Like "New Car Smell", it eventually dissipates, and is hardly noticeable in Vintage Vinyl. To some the Aroma of Newly-Opened Vinyl is up there with "New-Car Smell" and "Hopps #9" for evoking strong emotions and memories.

Now, what on earth does this have to do with Today's Scripture Passage? Let me set the stage. Peter, a Predominant Apostle of Jesus, has ventured outward from Jerusalem to Preach The Good News. While he may have ventured into Samaria and preached there to "sort of" Jews, he wasn't prepared to invite any Gentiles into the fold. In a word, he was prejudiced against them. God dealt with that by giving Peter a dream about Food (Taste and Smell) to teach him that what God has cleansed can't be called "Unclean". Since Peter wasn't "Getting it", God spoke to him directly through The Holy Spirit, to send him to Cornelius a Gentile, and Preach the Good News to him. (Hearing) Cornelius had also received a Message to SEEK out Peter (Sight), and when Peter gave him the Good News, He was baptized into the faith. (Touch, not only the laying on of Hands, but getting dunked in the Water.)

Something very tangible happened to Cornelius, and he expressed a Manifestation of the Holy Spirit called "The Gift of Tongues". This convinced Peter, and he later describes the Conversion of Cornelius as true and sincere, because he witnessed this Manifestation, just as others had witnessed the same thing happening to himself on the Day of Pentecost. The Conversion of Cornelius didn't just happen up in "The Cloud" but right before the Eyes (and Ears) of Witnesses.
