Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Wonderful,

I just finished reading a best selling novel called "The Women", by Kristin Hannah. It was about an Army Nurse in Vietnam and the shameful way Veterans were treated when they returned home. The book covered a period of twenty years, from 1967 to 1987. While I didn't agree with all of the author's opinions, I was amazed at the accuracy of the actual events that took place during that time. My memory was jogged so many times when reading that book that I had to put it down more than once and have a good cry.

Oddly enough, the most evocative section of the book (for me anyway) was when the Nurse in the story went to Kauai for R & R. She stayed at the Cocoa Palms Hotel in Kapa'a which doesn't even exist anymore. Her description of the Hotel (where Elvis used to stay) was spot on, with the clamshell sinks in every bathroom, the little beach across the street with the Seashell Restaurant, the Lobby with the tall peaked Polynesian-style roof, and the Romantic Lagoon behind the the Hotel.

I have been to Kauai 13 times since 1991, and the Coco Palms Hotel, which was devastated by Hurricane Iniki in 1992, was in a new state of decay every time I went. The last time I was there in 2013, it was surrounded by a construction fence, and destined for total destruction. I imagine it's gone now.

I'm a lot older than Kristin Hannah, and I marveled at how accurate her portrayals were. Surely she must have been a little girl when all these things took place. How could her memory of them be so crystal clear, and so much like mine?

Upon reading the Author's notes, I discovered that I was right. Hannah was just a little girl when these things took place, but she interviewed dozens of Witnesses, Military Nurses, Vietnam Vets, and other people, who WERE there. She even said that she had wanted to write this book for a long time, but didn't feel that she had been a mature enough writer to attempt it earlier. However, if she had waited another ten years or so, there would be very few actual eyewitnesses who remembered things as clearly as were in the book. Another book by Hannah, called "The Nightingale" was about the French Resistance in WW2. That one was about a period before my time, and I only know about it from Dad's Stories, books, and movies. But her Vietnam book produced REAL memories, of the Daily TV News, Classmates who were KIA, the Violence in our cities, and nine years of me riding the 600 miles to Washington DC every year to honor (belatedly) Our Vietnam Vets (Rolling Thunder).

To write a book like that, and have it be REAL, a person needs Witnesses. In Today's Verse, Peter speaks of being a witness to the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. We know from Scripture that Peter was indeed in Jerusalem during the Crucifixion, but he was probably hiding in a corner somewhere, weeping over the fact that he had denied Jesus three times. He had even thought of going back to his old job as a fisherman.

But he DID witness the Risen Christ, walked with Him, and ate with Him. The Holy Spirit filled him on the Day of Pentecost with Boldness and Courage, and Peter was able to be a Witness to the Truth. His ability to convey his witness was enabled by the Ultimate Witness of it all, The Holy Spirit.
