Almighty and Eternal God,

My job had become unbearable, and one day I just blew up at some customers. I was called into "the office" and forced to quit. Without going into details, I felt that I had been harassed into quitting, and deserved Unemployment Benefits. But of course, the huge company that I had worked for refused.

As I was wandering around a bad part of Boston, I saw a sign in an upstairs window that said something like this:

"PEOPLE'S AD HOC
TASK FORCE
FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE
COLLABORATIVE"

"Aha!" I mused. "They're the ones who can help me. After all, it's just me against a humongous multinational corporation which is a monopoly to boot. This will be their chance to effect some REAL Social Justice!"

So I went up the rickety stairs (like something out of a Dostoevsky novel) and presented my case to the bored paralegal in the grimy little office.

She absolutely agreed with me that I had an excellent grievance, and that the "People's Ad Hoc Task Force For Social Justice Collaborative" would be with me through thick and thin. Not only would she get me my unemployment, but, together, we would expose and bring down the evil monopoly that had been oppressing the workers of the world. "TOGETHER, We Can Do This!" she exclaimed.

I walked down the rickety stairs into the sunshine with new hope! I didn't so much want revenge, nor did I want to bring down the entire company (as it provided communications to the entire country) but I DID want my Unemployment. So I went home and prepared my case, making sure that I informed the "People's Ad Hoc Task Force For Social Justice Collaborative" of my activities, Court Dates, evidence, and so on.

My Court Date arrived, and the representative from the "People's Ad Hoc Task Force For Social Justice Collaborative" deserted me at the last minute. I sat alone at a table, in front of three magistrates. At the other table sat my ex-boss and five lawyers from the corporation's legal team.

I was not a Believer at the time, but there was something inside me that said "Just tell your story", so I did. When the magistrates asked my ex-boss if what I was saying was true, he said it was, and I was granted the Unemployment Benefit after all. The five lawyers just sat there with their mouths hanging open. The "grievance" was that the Boss had me doing all kinds of artwork for him, which was fine, but he hadn't reduced my quota of work. That was true, and enough to make my quitting appropriate.

There are a lot of people who think that they are "advocates". Even the Spanish word for "Lawyer" sounds like the word "advocate". But, a human advocate, despite her training and persuasiveness, can only do so much. It's an important profession, and one that is necessary, but, for every Lawyer who WINS a case, there is a Lawyer who has LOST the case. And then, of course, there are the ones who don't even show up.

The word that Jesus gives us for The Holy Spirit is "Paraclete". This is from a Greek Legal Term, meaning Advocate. But it has a deeper meaning. It means "Somebody Who Walks Beside You", a Helper, a Spokesperson, or a Mentor. The King James Version, which we are using for this particular series, uses the word "Comforter". That says so much more than just "Advocate", and is my Favorite name for The Holy Spirit.
