Almighty God,
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise and Worship,

I love the goofy, nonsensical humor of THE FAR SIDE. The Author, Gary Larson, is officially retired, but there is such a backlog of cartoons, that it is possible to get one sent to me everyday. One of Larson's favorite topics is Heaven and Hell. He always depicts God as an Old Man with a Long White Beard, and the devil with horns and a spiked tail. This is in accordance with our Western Idea, forged from centuries of Religious Art and legend. (I blame the Sistine Chapel for the depiction of God. NOBODY knows what He looks like.) There is one cartoon that was not Larson's, but similar in style. It shows The Creator as a Gourmet Chef, and He's cooking up Planet Earth. As he spices the mixture with a Spice Bottle labeled "JERKS", He muses "This Will Make Things INTERESTING".

As silly as this cartoon is, it makes a good point. When Jesus walked the earth, He did all manner of Miracles. The Miracles were tailored perfectly to the person's need.

If the person was blind, Jesus gave them their sight. If they were deaf, He gave them Hearing. If they were sick with a disease, He healed them. If they were oppressed by demonic activity, He Delivered them. And, like the cartoon implied, if He had to deal with a JERK, He had just the right thing to say to send the Jerk packing.

In an odd twist, the Jerks were usually persons of Intellect and Power. They were Officials, Religious Leaders, Experts in the Law, and Politicians.

Jesus faced down these jerks, especially when He had performed an exorcism. (Note that Jesus didn't perform exorcisms for every malady...just for those who needed THAT PARTICULAR Thing.) While other religious leaders may have been doing exorcisms, the thing that set Jesus apart from them was that HIS WORKED.

This must have caused great concern among the Religious Leaders of the time. They accused Jesus of performing His Miracles by means of "Black Magic", that is, casting out demons in the name of the prince of demons, Beelzebub. (That name, by the way, means "Lord of the Flies".) Anyway, this was a profound insult to The Holy Spirit, Who was doing the exorcism through Jesus. Tomorrow we will see how Jesus answered these "Jerks", and it is one of the scariest verses in the whole Bible.

Jesus calls The Holy Spirit the "Spirit of God". He also implies that He is God as well, and that The Kingdom of God is right before their eyes, among them.

He attributes the Miracles to The Spirit of God, and says that God is among them at that very minute.

This Powerful Statement should have brought the Religious Leaders to their knees, but instead, they plotted all the more as to how they would get rid of Jesus.

The TRUTH can be very painful. It's how we Respond to Truth that makes all the difference.
