61 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

I didn't live in Florida in 1980, but I remember hearing about The Mariel Boat Lift. At the time it seemed as though Fidel Castro had a moment of clarity and compassion by allowing over 100,000 people to leave his blighted island. Cuban People in Miami rejoiced that they were able to rescue long-lost relatives and help them become legal, productive immigrants.

But it was not all that was going on. Even liberal news sources admitted that Castro emptied out his prisons and mental institutions and sent the inmates to Miami along with the legitimate refugees. Of course, one could argue that everyone was essentially a prisoner in Castro's evil, oppressive regime. But the tactic of sending known criminals and lunatics was obviously designed to wreak havoc in the United States.

While Castro's motivation for allowing people to leave his island were not benign, there was great rejoicing among the Cuban-American Population. Families were reunited, and many became American Citizens. To this day, the Cuban-American Population in Miami tend to be conservative in their political outlook, as they have experienced first hand how dreadful living under communism can be.

All of us are in a kind of bondage to selfishness and sin. It is a "survival mechanism" that is built into us. When the Holy Spirit frees us, He frees us from a prison of our own making. We are held in bondage by false ideas, unjust traditions, bad habits, resentment, the need for vengeance, hurt feelings, and obsessive thoughts. Even our desire for justice can imprison us, especially if we can think of nothing else.

But, even as the Holy Spirit liberates the Captives (who are being held by other people), He also can unbind those who are prisoners of our own selves.

God Alone is the Bringer of Justice, the Avenger, and the One Who Makes All Things Right.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
