Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem (9/1/24)[Prayer]

Names and Titles of God the Holy Spirit
(Anointer) Isaiah 61:1-3 (Also Luke4:18-19)

61 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

King James Version

The Jewish High Holidays that come in the Autumn are among those Mandated by the Torah. These Special Observances were handed down to Moses from God, and include The Feast of Trumpets, Yom Kippur, and The Feast of Tabernacles. We know The Feast of Trumpets as "Rosh Hashana" or the Jewish New Year, and Yom Kippur as the "Day of Atonement".

The Feast of Tabernacles is less famous in the USA, because it involves building an actual hut in the yard, kind of like camping out. In Israel, this holiday is taken much more seriously, and these little huts spring up everywhere, even on a tiny apartment balcony jutting out from a high-rise in Tel Aviv. It was during this festive season that I visited Israel in 1984. It just happened that my Birthday occurred on the Last Day of The Feast of Tabernacles, which is called Simchat Torah (The JOY of the Torah".) It is on this day that the Liturgical Readings in the Synagogues around the world come to the end of Deuteronomy. That means that the following day, everybody goes back to the Beginning (Genesis 1). Some of these Scrolls are HUGE, and takes a lot of effort to roll them up. It is a day of great celebration. The Scrolls are rolled up, lovingly placed in velvet covers that are embroidered in gold, and paraded around the the street. The people approach reverently, and reach out to the Word of God, with a touch, a little kiss, and a prayer. There is also a lot of dancing in the streets, celebrating the completion of another year of reading the Scriptures. This celebration coincided with my 32nd Birthday, and it was the BEST Birthday of my life. I will never forget it.

This morning, as I ate my breakfast on the deck, I was doing my regular Bible reading. My Torah Portion was near the end of Deuteronomy, and I was reading about how Moses was blessing the People of Israel, Tribe by Tribe. Then I turned the page, and there was just a tiny bit left, so I kept on reading. Moses, after all he had been through, was only able to look across from a mountain and see the Promised Land. He just went away and died, and nobody knows where he is buried.

I found myself weeping, as I took the Bookmark and moved it back to Genesis 1. It's my own Personal "Simchat Torah", so why am I crying?

Last Year, Simchat Torah fell on October 7. On that day, Israel was viciously attacked, and the victims were nearly all civilians, at a Music Festival, enjoying the Holiday, maybe even winding up a Torah Scroll to dance in the street with it. Then this happened. Israel has been at war ever since. (Maybe that's why I wept this morning at my own personal Simchat Torah).

Like the more liturgical branches of Christianity, the Jewish Faith has an Order of Readings that assign various Scripture portions to the Days of the Calendar. This helps to assure Continuity, and Uniformity. It's helpful if a person is in another town and wants to attend a service. He will be getting the same Scripture Readings as his home church, even if the sermon and hymns are different.

Jesus had already made a Name for Himself as a Teacher and a Healer, when He went back to His home town of Nazareth for a visit. On the Sabbath, He was invited to the Lectern to do the Reading of the Day, which happened to be Isaiah 61. He read it, everybody smiled with approval ("Mary's Boy turned out so nice, don't ya think?"), and then He sat down. Then He said something unthinkable. He said:

“Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4 KJV)

He was saying that HE was, in fact, The Messiah, and that the Holy Spirit had Anointed Him for this Purpose.

Just imagine if the kid who grew up next door said something like that!

This Scripture, which is echoed in Luke, gives us a number of Titles for The Holy Spirit. We will go through them one by one, as we camp out on this Verse for a few days.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. (Mark 4:22)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Psalm 116

1 I love the Lord, because he has heard
my voice and my supplications.
2 Because he inclined his ear to me,
therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
3 The snares of death encompassed me;
the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
I suffered distress and anguish.
4 Then I called on the name of the Lord:
‘O Lord, I pray, save my life!’

5 Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;
our God is merciful.
6 The Lord protects the simple;
when I was brought low, he saved me.
7 Return, O my soul, to your rest,
for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

8 For you have delivered my soul from death,
my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling.
9 I walk before the Lord
in the land of the living.
10 I kept my faith, even when I said,
‘I am greatly afflicted’;
11 I said in my consternation,
‘Everyone is a liar.’

12 What shall I return to the Lord
for all his bounty to me?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the Lord,
14 I will pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
15 Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his faithful ones.
16 O Lord, I am your servant;
I am your servant, the child of your serving-maid.
You have loosed my bonds.
17 I will offer to you a thanksgiving sacrifice
and call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts of the house of the Lord,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!
