I looked across the crowded Salvation Army Thrift Store, and couldn't believe my eyes. On the counter at the front of the store was the unmistakable shape of a professional quality Electronic Keyboard Case. Since I have an incurable case of G.A.S.(Gear Acquisition Syndrome), I was immediately drawn to it. I asked permission to open the case, and inside was a YAMAHA Electronic Keyboard from the very early 2000's. I plugged in the Power Supply, and played "Desperado" on it, to the delight of the store.

WARNING! THE NEXT SENTENCE WILL BE INCOMPREHENSIBLE TO MOST PEOPLE, UNLESS YOU HAVE BEEN A WORKING MUSICIAN FOR THE LAST THIRTY YEARS.

Unlike Antique Guitars or Violins, old keyboards do not get better with age. This one was equipped with a 3.5" Floppy Disc storage system and the old 5-pin MIDI connectors which made it incompatible with current keyboards and workstations. The keyboard was only useful as a "portable piano", but I already have one of those. Three hundred dollars was too much to pay for a mere portable piano, so I asked if there were any discounts. My friend, the Cashier, said that it would be half price next Monday. Well, next Monday I was going to be in the Berkshires for The Wedding Of The Century, so I guess someone else would be enjoying the Keyboard. I was right. When I got home from Lenox, the keyboard was gone.

Now, to be fair, I think I should explain MIDI Technology, which has been my bread and butter for nearly forty years. Here a quote from Encyclopedia Britannica that explains it better than I can:

A live performer may use MIDI to simultaneously control several instruments onstage. In a recording studio a MIDI composition can be edited, resequenced, sped up, slowed down, or adjusted in numerous ways without costly and time-consuming rerecording. This versatility made MIDI composition widespread in popular music as well as in film and television scores.

Using MIDI Technology, I was able do do a five-hour New Years Eve Solo Gig, with just my PA, my Keyboard and a shoe box full of Floppy Discs.

By 2010, I had graduated to USB ports and a thumb drive, leaving the Shoe Box Full of Floppies and the Five-Pin Connectors behind. It actually was a blessing that all that information can now fit into something the size of my thumb. The more you plugged in MIDI Devices, the more the sounds would become delayed and out-of-sync. Any more than three devices would mess up your rhythm, as the delay became perceptible to your audience. A device was needed to sync everything up to a "MIDI CLOCK". Soon, your little stage set-up looked like Mission Control at NASA. I was terrified at my Y2K Gig that my entire rig would CRASH at Midnight. It didn't. WHEW!

Since all of these devices needed to be controlled, one device was designated "The Master" and the other devices were "The Slaves". There could only be one Master. In my case, it was the Keyboard itself. I even had a Vocal processor MIDI-connected to the Keyboard, so I could sing close harmonies with MYSELF, based on the chord I was playing with my left hand. (This worked out great for the Andrews Sisters Medley I sang).

In our "politically correct" universe, the terms "Master" and "Slave" are no longer acceptable. It matters not that we are talking about inanimate devices that send and receive bits and bytes through a cable. The words themselves are a cause for offense.

And yet, here the Disciples call Jesus Master, Master as they shake Him out of His sleep because they fear the storm.

St. Paul calls himself a doulos which is the lowest kind of slave in the kingdom. They don't seem to have a problem with those words!

The various MIDI devices that I used (Drum machines, Sequencers, Samplers, and Vocal Processors) didn't function at all unless they were hooked up to the MIDI Master Device. That's just how it worked, and nobody's feelings were hurt.

Perhaps we can translate MIDI to read:

Master Instructs Doulos In infinite love"

God gifted you with many talents, and today your story has me chuckling. I always wondered about G.A.S. and here you’ve called it out. It’s true in these P.C. times some are offended by so many words, but people need to know that one day EVERYONE will bow to and acknowledge our MASTER! And that will be a great day, among the greatest.

O God, our Father, You are all that man’s soul, mind and spirit could possibly desire. Our problem is not in believing in You. Our problem seems to be in believing that you condescend to hear and help us. Our problem is that we do not believe we are worthy of asking Divine intervention in our puny problems of life and living. Help us to see You as Jesus would have us see and pray as He taught us to pray, saying, “Our Father …” To see You as “our Father”, full of love and compas­sion, will cause our faith to mount and our hopes to rise. Our Father, Who art in heaven, we love You.
