A few months ago I visited a nearby church to see if it might be a good place for fellowship. In keeping with my church upbringing I wore a simple suit and tie. Of the approximately 200 men in attendance I was the only one in a suit. The Pastor was the only one in something resembling a leisure suit. I sat thru the sermon and then made a quick exit and never returned. It reminded me of videos I saw of people visiting President Regan lying in wait who looked like they were dressed for a day at Disney World. No respect for Regan and no respect for a house of God! So few Americans have any class these days.

Where I grew up as a kid most people did not have Sunday clothes. And churches didn’t have air conditioning. People wore the same thing they wore everyday but they were freshly cleaned.

I was going to make a “Sunday Best” reply, amazing it took so long to happen.

I live in a weekend recreational area where people come up to their cottages, they show up in church in shorts and T shirts. But at least they show up.

IMHO the Catholic Church is dying, through their own fault. Used to be the church encouraged families and often had 3-4 generations attending. Now it is 90% old people. And when they die off the church will close.

I have always thought monk cloth robes and sandals would be a humble approach.

I used to attend a semi mega-church occasionally but realised most the “best dressed” were social show-offs. The preacher was a dandy. Those decked out didn’t fall out when tapped on the forehead much.

Agree with her and (Saint Paul) that dressing to show off your body is not appropriate to church. However I am leary of making myself the arbiter of when someone else crossed that line.

Coinciding with Vatican 2 was this notion that you could wear super-casual clothes to church and it would be reinforced with the 'It doesn't matter what you wear but what is in your heart'

The effect was profoundly demoralizing and continues to be, as we have seen. It's a great way to denigrate the sanctity and seriousness of the Mass.p>That was the point of the commie-infiltrators in the Church, and it remains important today.

What would you wear to your arraignment? To an appointment with execs of your company? On a TV news show?

To a funeral of a beloved friend?

To any place you were trying to give a good impression showing you respected the seriousness of the event?

Did not the Almighty say He would be there in person, if "two or more are gathered in My name"?

Believe me the hipster/flip flop/t shirt and shorts crowd are not showing their genuine faith, they are undermining and demonstrating hostility.

I haven’t attended church in years.

There’s not one within 60 miles that I would set foot in.

“I’m pretty sure Jesus dressed in rags and doesn’t care if I wear a tuxedo or not...”

Are your serious? Would Roman soldiers cast lots to win his rags at the crucifixion? It was a seamless garment, very epensive.

God told Moses to tell the people to put on their best when they assembled on Mt. Sinai.

How about we just dress modestly and within resoanable means of our blessings.

Dress codes like dresses only and business attire for church, quite literally prevent effective witness for our Lord.

While Christ’s robe was valuable, that was due to the love of his Mother, not wealth. Lets not forget Christ mission was often among the poor and destitute, where he preached among those with barely a rag to cover themselves.

Clothing should not be a barrier to entering a building filled with the Church Body, if it is then the building is not Christ’s Church.

TRUTH!!!

Just like the rebellious teenagers of the 60’s are now running our government..(into the ground..), our churches are now run by rebellious teens of the 90’s. -And having the same effect.

People, grunge may have been cool in your middle school back in 1997, but it doesn’t belong in the church.

Church doesn’t need “cool”; it needs “Holy”.

It doesn’t need formal dress, but sheesh.. SOME modicum of respect for the Lord you’ve come to worship. After all HE provides for you; the least we can do is show up in our best - for Him.

Sunday morning - are you coming to a picnic to play frisbee or to worship the God who created all things and is Holy?

It’s about respect.

That’s what the people at my church say. These are the folks who wear torn jeans (for “style”), short shorts, jammies and stained hoodies.

Just my opinion, but I see dresses cultural. And I don’t see God as cultural.

I eat, what you wear is completely irrelevant. I don’t dress for God I dress for the people there. If I was dressing for God I’d be buck naked.

When I was a kid I didn’t like getting dressed up for church. I asked my mother why we had to. She said, “Well, if you were invited to the White House to meet the president, wouldn’t you dress up for that? Going to church is being invited to meet God.”

Of course that was back when people understood the virtue of being respectful.

Flip flops are peak laziness and they have no tactical value.
