” But is going to church looking slovenly better than not going at all? “

Only if you are homeless. Otherwise people need to do better.

People still understand the disrespect if others dress like slobs when attending a funeral, but think dressing for church as IDGAF is acceptable.

Bowed heads, clasped hands, hearts full of obedience. And, proper attire.

I’m watching that video. Watching them pretty girls in short dresses grinding on the altar.

I want to go to that church.

I don’t even need to cite the myriad of verses describing how God judges the heart.

That said, if your heart is inclined towards God, you desire to show Him reverence and respect.

In (what remains of) our culture shorts and floppy shoes are not reverent and respectful. Dressing ‘up’ from one’s norm is. Additionally, it is part of our role to encourage others in faith. Doing our best encourages others to do likewise. Behaving poorly also encourages others to do likewise.

That said, if one is dressing fancily to impress others for one’s own gratification, there’s perfect clarity in Christ’s words towards that attitude, and I won’t bother quoting those either. Get your heart in line, and the rest follows.

Why are you speaking to that poster with such harsh disrespect and rudeness? You sound personally offended by them for some reason. This is not a high court. It’s just a forum for different opinions.

That video is actually about a decade old. However she is correct about how women are dressing in church. I’ve seen it get worse and worse.

One should dress reasonbly as a sign of respect. Respect to God, to his house of worship and to his people.

Personally, I usually dress minimum business casual....but then, I’m old, and have been dressing that way for decades. Even for a trip to Walmart.

I think the word one could consider is reverence.

Regarding making poor people feel out of place, you can buy a used sport jacket at goodwill for $8.50. A dress shirt for $6.16. A pair of khakis at Walmart for less than $15. which is a lot less than many people pay for tennis shoes, so it is not really a money issue.

I remember on youth day, they had 13-year-olds at one church I was visiting serving communion and one of the boys was wearing a Batman tea shirt. A blank black tea shirt would have been cheaper and more respectful.

If it becomes a contest of what one can get away with, perhaps one should examine their heart.

Seriously - that video is cracking me up. That gal is yelling!

“How dare you come to church with your titties out. How dare you dance around showing your thong?. How is it these hoes show up at church looking like that? Them girls bend over and you can see they ass crack. I can see the crease between your clothes and your butt.”

I know this are serious video. I’m sorry but I’m dying laughing here.

Well, I certainly don't advocate wearing any of those things to church, but people might dress a little more relaxed at some church services, like "Church on the Beach".

Did you bother to watch the video? It wasn’t about wearing rags, it was about wearing inappropriate, body-flaunting clothing.

I can’t disagree. While I do not believe ANYONE should think being dressed “to the 9’s” is necessary or even appropriate, dressing in clean, neat clothing shows your respect for your house of worship. I’ve been to a church that was very “accepting” of all-comers, and I did not see very many that seemed to have that in mind there.

Right-fitting and revealing clothes absolutely do not belong in church. It is sin.

dressing neatly is a sign that what you are doing and participating in is special....

its not that I ever got that gussied up...but I wouldn't wear shorts or a tank top to church....or halter tops or muscle shirts...

Thanks to Princess/Duchess Kate and Meghan, I've noticed the trend of very classy and timeless wedding dresses among celebs and public figures both here and across the pond as of late. There's a reason for the expression "Your Sunday best." You should wear the best clothes you have attending church because it honors God. God, of course, doesn't care how we are dressed, but we should care enough to give him our best. Nobody would show up to to a wedding or other special occasion dressed like a slob, and if we are going to meet God in a special way in a day set apart in his house, we should do the same. It isn't about us or others, it's about how we show honor to God. And it doesn't mean "dressing to the nines" to show off to others. It is simply another way of giving our best to God.

If your best clothes are thongs, cargo shorts, and a wifebeater tshirt, you're probably too poor to even have a pot to pee in. In that case, God bless you. But one can get some fairly decent clothes at a second-hand store.

I wear a simple shirt, tie, slacks, and dress shoes for church every Sunday (even in the summer when it gets around 110 degrees, like today). The rest of the year I may wear a suit coat. It really isn't that hard to do for one hour a week.

How did they dress in the early church? There’s nothing in the Bible that mentions it.

…and God will be more impressed with us if we’re properly attired. Okay. Un-huh. Right.

The aim is self-discipline, not to impress God. That's one of the reasons the military - at least when I served - emphasized that one's appearance be "squared away."

Dressing appropriately - for church or any other venue - is the first step in building a positive self-image that carries you forward to greater accomplishments. It also demonstrates a respect for those around you.

It is very easy to ignore this and dress sloppily and I have to work against that tendency myself. But, with church in particular, I find that when I dress nicely - pressed shirt & trousers, shined shoes, perhaps a tie & coat - I pay greater attention to the service and get a lot more out of it.

All of this used to be generally understood. Watch some YouTube videos of street scenes in the '40s, '50s, and even '60s. The fashions change but you don't see a bunch of slobs.
