Rev. Mark Sandlin is the senior impastor at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, a small PCUSA congregation in Greensboro, NC. The church describes itself as “an inclusive community, experiencing, exploring, appreciating, celebrating the spiritual foundation of existence” while also “affirm(ing) the presence of that which has been traditionally called God in human life.”
Sandlin received his M. Div. from Wake Forest University’s School of Divinity, is the co-founder of The Christian Left, and writes at The God Article. Most of his theological beliefs were whispered to him by the devil himself, however, as he is easily the most progressive PCUSA ‘pastor’ we’ve ever seen.
We last encountered him after he insisted that Jesus was not God, something that is not enough to have him booted from the heretical Presbyterian Church USA denomination, and in a recent sermon series, he insisted that Jesus was not supernaturally born of a virgin, but rather the sexual union between Mary and another man.

That’s why it’s a miracle…
Pleased to meet you, hope you guess my name. Woo Woo
God, by definition, is not bound by natural laws He created.
M. Div. simply does not cut it as far as scholarship is defined. I have doctorate in the phiiosophy of science, which hardly scratches the volume of knowledge, but with it can entirely prove him not only dead wrong, but also impossible, both physically and spiritually.
Why even become a pastor ? Just get another job
Why stop there? By that reasoning, there is no forgiveness of sin. Psychology 101.
And there certainly isn’t a resurrection. Christianity falls like a house of cards at that point.
He said
“I guess I’m just saying the Church should make more room for people that don’t follow the mainline and traditional dogma”.
It already has or we would not see him preaching in a PCUSA church. What he might mean is he wants other churches to allow his sort of views.
Not biology but does he deny that we have a creator who was able to create the heavens the Earth the universe....
By definition an omniscient being can do anything that is coherently plausible (as opposed to, say, making a 4-sided triangle). This would include a virgin birth. So it is very clear this “pastor” denies the existence of said omniscient being, and is in fact an atheist. Question is, what is this PCUSA flock and PCUSA as a whole going to do about that?
Lots of things in the Torah violate the laws of physics and biology. That’s why they are called “miracles.” It’s kind of the point of them. He who made The Rules chose to break His rules.
I’m not one to talk about intra-Christian disputes, but that seems a rather stupid thing for a supposed man of faith to say.
This guy failed “Supernatural 101.”
Not surprised. The Presbyterian Church is the most homosexual-tolerant of Christian denominations. They reject the virgin birth of Jesus but give a strong “thumbs up” to men having anal sex with each other. Sick blasphemers !
Whoa amigo! Stop right there.
The “Presbyterian Church” is not “the most homosexual-tolerant Christian denominations”. The Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA), which this article is about, does not represent all Presbyterian denominations. For example the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) doesn’t tolerate homesexuality, doesn’t have women pastors and adheres to the teaching of Scripture faithfully regarding ordination.
Um, I don’t think idiot grasps the whole concept of this religion thingy and should probably find a new Lind of grifting.

“PCUSA”
There ya go. PCUSA

Learned something new today as I didn’t realize there were two major Presbyterian denominations.
Which one is it that has a hand with the finger pointing to the sky on the steeple of the church? I’ve seen a few of those in the south over the years.
The Presbyterians aren’t big on religious images in worship. It’s rare to see anything but a simple cross in/on most Presbyterian churches. The statues are more likely Catholic.
Mormons will have the Angel Moroni blowing a trumpet on their temple spires, but Mormons aren’t even Christian.

Took me awhile to figure out where I saw it at. It was the First Presbyterian Church in Port Gibson, MS.
Found this tidbit about it from roadsideamerica.com:
...”The first full-time pastor of Port Gibson’s First Presbyterian Church was Zebulun Butler, who’d stab the sky with his finger to punctuate his sermons. This was in 1860, and his congregation liked the gesture so much that instead of a cross atop its very high church steeple, it placed a big, gold-painted wooden finger.
The idea, they said, was that good Christians should always keep their eyes on God. One could also come away with the less reverent message, “Jesus went thataway!”
Woodpeckers eventually took their toll, and the wooden hand was replaced with one made of sheet iron, ten feet high, in 1903. That hand is still there today. It was given a fresh coat of gold in 1989, and again in 2017, at a cost of nearly $40,000...”
