Our One and Only God!

How Righteous and How Just and True You Are!
For You Alone Are Worthy Of Praise and Worship,

Ever since the TV Mini-Series ROOTS, there has been an upsurge of interest in Genealogy and Family Trees. My Mom got very interested in this, and was puzzled by a story about my Great-Grandfather (named Dan), who fought in the Civil War in the Ninth Massachusetts Infantry, and who saw action in the Battle of Fredericksberg. Upon discharge at the end of the War, he joined the Boston Fire Department and fought The Great Boston Fire of 1872. At sometime during this period, a large Blue and White Turkey Platter became a Family Heirloom. Whether it was looted from the West End during the Great Boston Fire, we will never know. My sister has it now.

Dan died rather young, not from War Wounds or Smoke Inhalation, but from "The Curse of the Irish" as my Mom called it. He left a young widow (Mom's Grandmother) who next married an older man named Jack. Family lore has it that Jack, who must have been a sweet and tolerant man, spent every Sunday alone, because his wife reserved that day to take the bus all the way to Roslindale to the Civil War Vets Section of the cemetery to weep over her previous husband's grave.

My Grandmother, Elizabeth, was born somewhere in the interim, so we all figured that Dan was our Great-Grandfather, and we had the Turkey Platter to show for it. It was cool, having a Civil War Vet as our ancestor, and I went to a lot of Battlefield Sites in Virginia and Pennsylvania and saw his name on the rosters.

As searching became easier because of the Internet, the long journeys to old Archives for Birth Certificates and Baptismal Records became obsolete. It became possible to do an entire Family Tree in a few days, rather than years. Mom enlisted the aid of her daughters and their computers, to find out more about Our Civil War Hero Ancestor.

When she started seeing the Marriage Licenses, Birth Certificates, and Baptismal Records, she recoiled in shock.

Her Mother, Elizabeth Mary, was born MORE than Nine Months after Dan Died, and LESS than Nine Months after she married Jack! OH NO! That meant...Perish the thought! Did a grieving widow go astray and then marry somebody quickly when she found out she was pregnant? Were she and Jack lovers before they were married? And Just WHERE did that Turkey Platter come from?

The next time you find yourself becoming bored with a Genealogy in Scripture, remember my tale of woe. The reason these Genealogies appear in Scripture is to give us a firm understanding of the reality and continuity of God's Plan. In the Genealogy of Jesus, cited in Matthew Chapter 1, we learn of The Legitimacy of Jesus as Messiah. The Genealogy is remarkable because it has the names of four women, and these women came from some questionable circumstances.

1. Tamar: (Genesis 38) Tamar's story occurs right in the Middle of the epic story of Joseph and his Brothers. While Joseph has had a Musical written about him, Tamar's story is so shocking and sad that I doubt if it will ever see the Broadway Stage. As a childless widow of TWO of Judah's sons, she has the right to marry the third son in order to have children in the line of Judah. But Judah thinks she must have a curse on her and avoids the obligation to give her his third son in marriage. So, she tricks Judah into having sex with her and bears him twin boys. The first time I read this chapter, especially since it interrupted the Story of Joseph, I was shocked and scandalized. Why was this even IN the Bible?

2. Rahab: Some scholars just can't cope with the fact that Rahab was a practitioner of the "World's Oldest Profession", and so they mistranslate the word for "Harlot" as "Innkeeper". Uh No. She was what we call "A Workin' Girl" and she lived in the doomed city of Jericho. Her home was in the defensive wall, which would be "ground zero" in an attack, so you can bet she didn't live in the nice part of town. And yet, she showed courage and faith, hid the Israelite spies and assisted their escape, and saved herself and her family in the process. She ended up marrying Salmon, a Hebrew of the Tribe of Judah.

3. Ruth: Ruth is a childless widow, a foreigner, and, until she makes a declaration of Faith in the Hebrew God (Your God Shall Be My God), she is an idolater. Yet, she ends up in Bethlehem, picking up the bits of grain the Harvesters drop. This was called gleaning, and it was provision for the poorest of the poor. (No Food Stamps in those days!). She is noticed by the Owner of the Field, and by happy coincidence, he is related to Ruth's late husband. This gives him the right to redeem her out of poverty and widowhood. They marry, and have children, and she ends up being King David's Great Grandmother

4. Bathsheba: I always thought BATH sheba was a funny name for this next lady, with whom King David was smitten with her because he was spying on her taking a BATH. Some people blame Bathsheba for bathing on the roof in full sight of the Palace, but roofs in the Middle East are just as much a part of the home as indoors. In fact, there are several instances of Bible People sleeping on their roofs, bathing on their roofs, praying on the roof, and so on. Even today, in Israel, the Tent for the Holiday of Sukkah is set up on the roof, the Hot Water Tank with it's solar panel is on the roof, laundry is done on the roof, and so on. Bathsheba had what is called in legal terms an expectation of privacy because of custom and the mandated parapet around the top of her house to prevent people from falling off the roof. Also, she was bathing because it was the law that she ritually cleanse herself after her monthly period. So she was NOT playing the temptress here. Nevertheless, there are those who can't bear the thought that the Illustrious King David was a sinner. He sure was, as evidenced by Psalm 51 and other Penitential Psalms.

But Bathsheba was married to someone else, Uriah, one of King David's Top Generals. It shouldn't have gone any further than David's spying, but it did. And somehow, after all this, Bathsheba ends up in the Genealogy of Jesus.

The Name "Son of David" appears a lot in Scripture, referring to the Messiah. In order to qualify, the Messiah would have to be able to trace His Ancestry to King David, and, further back, to the Tribe of Judah. Matthew does this beautifully in the First Chapter of his Gospel, and doesn't leave out the Women who actually had the Sons.

But here, in Revelation, Jesus is called The ROOT of David. That means that He preexisted David, Bathsheba, Boaz, Ruth, Rahab, Salmon, Judah and Tamar. He preceded David by INFINTY.

I bring up all these people to show that Mom shouldn't have been so scandalized by Elizabeth Mary at all. We're all here because of what things people did in the past. If the Dan/Jack Mystery didn't happen, I wouldn't be writing this Thread Today.

And my sister wouldn't have The Turkey Platter.

So it all worked out.
